Wesleyan--not a good player

My kid was deferred to RD. He passed pre read easily. Wes coach knew he had two other “offers” from D3 schools. Kid ED1 to Wes over those two schools.

My kid academically on par. All AP and over 4 GPA.

He was told expressly (and in an email and text, which I found surprising given what I’ve read that D3 coaches are more circumspect given uncertainty) he had full support and was top recruit and he had “one of [coaches] three spots” before kid ED1’d.

Now, deferral email said that because kid mid semester grades dropped, that is why deferred. He did get two Bs when he is generally all A’s. I hope that is the real reason. But still, it seems very messy. Kids other two schools have moved on and regrettably had not more spots. Happy if he walked on.

Kid is not a minority, and we don’t qualify for financial aid. I’ve spoke with another parent of the 25 and they are in same spot. Not minority and full pay. And deferred to RD.

I know it is easy for people to anonymously post crude sentiments here. I get it. I’m just looking for some others here to handicap our situation with Wes. I’m hoping it works out and my kid is still hopeful. Coach has been in communication and is still pushing kid hard at admin.

Kid has applied RD to other schools and will be able to walk on there. But still, holding hope for Wes. Maybe being deferred to RD really was a better outcome than ED1 deferral? Thoughts?

I’m sorry, PP. This sounds really frustrating. We had a much easier time with D1 recruiting, as did all our friends with recruited athletes. I guess the D1 coaches have more pull.

I read on CC that the parent whose DD was deferred to ED2 was ultimately accepted at Grinnell in an early decision round. Hope your son ends up in a great place too.

Generally kids are expected to perform at the pre-read level or better. Your kid went from all As to As & Bs. It may "seem minor" to you, but when they have thousands of kids with straight A transcripts...probably stuck out. They were probably hoping the Bs didn't drop to Cs or something....

If your son had been pre-read with As & Bs on the transcript and heard that from the coach before all of this, then that's different and I think you have every right to feel hurt. But, your child submitted a transcript that did not match/continue the performance of the pre-read transcript....

Poster said mid semester...that is first quarter...and yes, those need to be submitted. At least they did at other NESCAC schools. And then the final semester grades as well when the semester is complete.

This just isn’t true. Own dc was a nescac athlete - no senior grades for ed1

PP that's not what I know at all. Amherst, Williams, Midd, and Bowdoin all want fall grades (quarter grades or progress reports) for ED1.

Yes. Why would wesleyan have a different policy? The nescac schools work together to have a cohesive strategy regarding academics and athletics.

Think the poster knows what happened to his kid is within the bounds of his mid semester grades dropped (although a few Bs in an AP course load is better than the stats of the ED1 kids published by Wes), the question is the same deal on, or is Wes no longer required to honor the athlete hook? Seems the deferral letter suggested mid semester grades as a concern. If hook still not good, he would have been rejected. So to poster, hang in there. I think if grades are same (seem better than) as pre read, wes should honor it’s commitment. That’s my take.

Seems like the two Bs escalated the amount of support required by the coach and presumably those slots were already taken.
