Dr. Duran must go

wow - the anger in this thread is sad. It's terrible that the APS community is so divided. I do believe the administration has to have some fault here, but let's everyone try not to be so angry at each other!

He gives high-level updates at board meetings. And our school give more details at PTA meetings.
Nothing with actual substance. If there was a plan or actual info, someone should be able to provide a link. It doesn't exist.

There is no plan with real metrics or steps. There is only puffery. For that reason alone Duran needs to get out.

There are a variety of tools available for schools to come up with individual plans for each student based on their needs - each student requires different interventions.

Exactly. APE doesn't understand how APS classrooms work, how many resources our schools have to provide interventions. That's the plan. Be good schools that provide interventions when needed. But then APE has an agenda of tearing down APS so they're going to stick with their "no plan" talking point.

Yes an intervention for an ENTIRE grade level is a plan. And I’m the clueless one.

This might be a problem that screaming DEI at might not solve.

Not APE and sorry that doesn’t fit your narrative but when most of our students are behind and there is a huge learning loss the plan is just individual interventions by staff?!?!??? Sorry I think we need more than that it is a HUGE problem.

Sorry, well, then it sounds like YOU don't understand how teaching and learning work. Maybe talk to your principal.

+1

Does PP even have a kid in APS?

No. Or he or she is totally uninvolved and clueless.

Just note that absolutely no one has linked to any plan in school talk messages, school board slides or posted elsewhere. That's because it doesn't exist. Instead, they continue to insult those who are concerned about a lack of an actual plan for catching up students who are woefully behind.

Apparently when they lose an argument their solution is to insult their opponents. So mature.

I’m not your link b1tch. If you follow SB meetings you would have seen it. But clearly you haven’t so…
No one in this entire thread has even suggested a plan beyond teachers doing what they normally do plus Dreambox and Lexia. Nothing additional is planned. You keep saying there's something more, but refuse to say what. If there is more, them for goodness sake, enlighten me. The silence is deafening.

Please tell me dreambox and lexia is not still happening for the younger grades.. they should not be on Ipads at all.
They built an hour into my 3rd grader's schedule for daily Lexia and Dreambox. It's its own class period. It's also a daily feature of my kindergartener's stations. We were told that teachers have use quotas they have to hit.

My kinder loves Lexia but I have to charge his iPad once every 2 weeks or so- they aren’t spending large amounts of time on it at school.

Duran should go. It’s his squirrelly style of communication that annoys me. Never once has he said kids absolutely need to be in school like Fauci, Biden, Eric Adams , the Sec of Education or even the Fairfax and Loudoun superintendent. He never reviewed the science and data that clearly stated schools were safe and he didn’t open 4 days last year like every other school district. He never talks about rigor, academics, learning loss, achievement. Its always “stay safe” or “schools are closed “. He leads from behind always. Never consistent and clear about education and students are the last thing on his mind. He wasted 11 million dollars on a failed virtual program and the school board hasn’t held him accountable for that. He has yet to address the dismal SOL scores in Arlington. It’s just disgusting.

Another clueless parent.

What was the first thing he discussed at the mid-December SB meeting?

The school board still hasn't asked him about lowering the cut score for passing the Reading SOL in early 2021 on the State Board of Education (his term is thankfully ending in June). We know they know. But they don't ask.

They think helping him govern makes them look bad.

late to this thread, but reading through everything, it's debatable how much Duran is responsible for some of the negative aspects of his tenure. but nowhere am I seeing mention of anything positive he's done. I think that's telling....

People mentioned positive things earlier. There are one or two raging parents who are posting over-the-top, irrational hate.

No one has made personal insults. People have only commented on things APS has done or hasn't done.

You can keep acusing people of not being APS parents or not being informed or being irrational, but that doesn't make it so. Those are just insults showing you lack substantive responses to the criticism. Weak.

I have a kid with learning loss and learning disabilities and this is the intervention. ipad games. No data that these programs work, without 1:1teaching, to help SN kids learn. Zero

Liar.

There are personal attacks against Duran and Loft on almost every page.
Posters are uniformed. As has been clearly demonstrated.
Posters are irrational and angry, lashing out at Duran repeatedly.

I have a kid with dyslexia and her tutor said that Lexia is a great, evidence-based tool. She was thrilled that DD is using it.

APS is also more widely using OG (part of Duran’s plan) which is the best approach for all kids but especially those with LDs.

I think the anger represents how desperate families have gotten at this point. I agree the division is sad, but it also reflects how in crisis education is right now. I don’t see how communities are prioritizing anything else at the moment over schools. Our most vulnerable kids (young learners, special ed, low income) need us to do everything we can to ensure they have some stability the same way society rallied around nursing homes in early 2020.
