It’s a crime that Howell didn’t get a 2nd card. I was extremely impressed by BYU. They were less creative, but still dangerous plenty of times, and given their recruiting pool is a tiny fraction of that of any other D1 school, what that coach/team has accomplished is really amazing. I seem to be in the minority, but did not think it was clear that FSU deserved to win - some of the better chances belonged to BYU, despite possession.

Howell should have gotten a second card, and for her to put her finger to her lips after her PK goal (in response to the boo's) was classless.
PK's are a crappy way to end a national championship. I would rather see them play more overtime than that. Two 10 minute OT's seem hopelessly short.

I agree. Not so much about the ref but Florida was better, international players are better.

Sp A team full of international players representing 8 different countries scrap by a bunch of girls from Utah with the help from the ref.

Those girls from Utah ripped through D1 women’s soccer this year. BYU had a 3.5 goals and a 24 shots per gamer average this year. Good break down of the games. Mikayla Colohan was a non factor after the hard take down by Jaelin Howell.

The real story is the strength of Florida St's defense. BYU averaged 3.5 goals and in the final scored none. BYU averaged 10 corners per game but in the final had 3 as opposed to 9 corners for Fl St. Madril was amazing and good enough for the WNT. Local Lauren Flynn was rock solid. They distributed out of the back, controlled the pace of play, and shut down an otherwise very productive BYU offense.

You're not in the minority.

BYU was doing very well till Howell removed the leading scorer in D1 this year. After that it was different game but Florida St took over in the second and in the OT. Florida was not Tiki-taka but could pass and keep possession. Later in the game BYU was just dumping the ball, missing easy passes and losing possession. Maintaining possession is a lot easier vs making long runs and fighting for inaccurate passes over a long game. Florida St players were more adaptable.

BYU is very athletic and fast but not creative. They just turn and go whether it’s 1v1 or 1v3. The way to counter a team like BYU is to use a variation of Catenaccio with a sweeper and/or pack it in and make them break you down in tight spaces- ie stop them from going forwards. It takes skill, vision, high iq players and above all patience to break down a good team playing defense like that. Florida St and Santa Clara both packed it in against BYU.

Last time I checked the star of FSU and the Hermann trophy winner (Howell) and the best player in the game (Madrid) are American. Yes they have internationals too. What’s wrong with that? You prefer a bunch of girls that will be co-married to a white guy in a few years?

The bio for the local player for FSU (Robbins) must have a typo. It says she played for Fredericksburg FC, but obviously she must have played ECNL or Girls DA.
