How does anyone host a party, pick a theme, and then tell their invited guests to do the cooking to fit that theme? It is rude in the extreme. As a different poster said, raised by wolves or something. |
I’ve been to quite a few potluck parties like that. None hosted by Indians. Some were holiday parties so it made a bit more sense, but I did attend two non-holiday potluck parties with cultural themes. One was to say goodbye to our Brazilian priest who was leaving for another parish. We’re not Brazilian, but we figured out how to make a dish using the internet and a trip to a store in Aspen Hill. It probably didn’t taste authentic, but he was touched. The other was a friend’s birthday and she had a French theme despite not being French. She supplied wine, bread, cheese, and desserts. Everyone else brought a French dish to share. It was an amazing party. Also, when I go to my family reunion BBQ every summer, I know soul food is expected. I can’t show up with pizza or Chinese food. |

I agree that it's rude-- hosts should make a main dish and others could bring sides, appetizers, another main if they choose, dessert, etc.
That said, I would be completely into making Indian food. I'm watching Madhur Jaffrey on Master Class now-- yummmm. |
