I HATE those new Highlander commercials.

You know, the one with snotty little boy who's hair is too long, wears a bomber jacket and skinny jeans. The brat is preaching materialism and calling non-Highlander parents lame. I don't think I would bother hating the commercial if it was for the fact that it's geared towards children.

Totally agree. I commented on that to my DH last night. The kid is super annoying.

YES! I assume there's a vast market of materialistic parents who aren't bothered by ableist language, care very much what strangers think of them, and let their children push them around, but do we have to encourage them?

Haven't seen it yet but it sounds revolting!

I went to high school with a kid who drove that same kind of green wagon. And yes, annoying commercial. Made me love my German car even more.

Funny you mention that. I hate it too, but always forget what car it's for. A case of people remembering the theme of the ad but not the product. Sadly, I'm sure they researched it heavily and it will be effective in its target audience.

"Just because you're a parent, doesn't mean you have to be lame."

"I don't tolerate dorkiness very well."

I hate it too. Although I do find minivans lame, and don't tolerate dorkiness very well myself. I think that kid is bratty and effeminate. Skinny jeans? Really?

"Lucky for me, my mom gets it. This Highlander is so cool, I actually want to be seen in it. Even my mom likes it, and she's, like, 37 years old."

What bothers me is how young these kids are, talking trash like that. It's the total Zach/Cody/Disney-ification of the early elementary years, and it's gross. I wouldn't be happy if my 15 yr old talked to me that way, but it would be less gross than when an 8 year old does it.

On the one hand, I think that every kid whose parents picked their kid up in an old car understands the sentiment;
on the other hand, I think Toyota crossed the line here. It's distasteful and makes parents who can't or don't want to buy a $30K+ SUV look really bad.

I hate it too. The kids are too young to care about that at that age anyway.

We never had a new car and I never gave it a second thought. Even when my dad had a 20 year old boat of a car. My friend, the Oncologists daughter, thought it was the coolest thing ever.

You think so? I think it makes parents who don't teach their kids that people's possessions don't matter and that we do not use "lame" as a pejorative look really bad.

I think he's cute. But the message, not so much.
