Does anyone have a child who goes there? Just looking for general feedback on academics, general atmosphere, safety, etc.

I may have been the original poster of this two years ago when my daughter was selecting a DCC school.

We have been fairly happy with Northwood. While there is no IB program, there are a lot of honors and AP classes available. Unlike almost any other MCPS high school, Northwood students take 8 classes instead of 7, with 4 of them each day with lunch in the middle. That's good and bad. They have the opportunity to explore more classes, but by senior year many students have nearly all the credits they need to graduate and take an abbreviated day. It also means they spend less time in each class they take than other MCPS students.

In addition, all 1400 students have lunch at 10:25, so it's horribly crowded and early. There was a well-publicized stabbing incident during lunch last month, which was kind of unnerving. The student who was stabbed did not have serious injuries. But this and a few other isolated incidences of violence do make me somewhat concerned about safety.

The principal is very hands on and devoted to the students and responsive to parents.

From what I've seen, there's a top-rate musical theater program, although DD is not involved in it.

My niece and nephew graduated from Northwood last year and had positive experiences. They are now both at respected four year universities. Never had a problem with any violence--I get the feeling the "good" kids stick together and take honors/AP classes with each other, and the rest, well, are there as well.

Students and some staff refer (privately) to the school as "Northweed".

We've been REALLY pleased! Our child loves cross country running, and all of the ecological programs. I'm very impressed with her coursework. Their in all advanced placement classes, and are challenged within reason. The administration seems transparent, and the facilities are almost all new. I am very impressed with their performing arts resources. Our child really enjoys the smaller student body. Their friends at Blair are always very jealous of how intimate the environment feels at Northwood. The other kids say, "We totally feel like a number at Blair". I'm sure they're exaggerating, but it's an interesting asset to hold onto for 'Northweed.'

There's a similar name for almost all MCPS high schools. Example: Blairajuana.

And Sherwood is often referred to as Sherweed.

What's your point?

Drugs are everywhere. Quit living in your bubble.

There's also
- White Man (Whitman)
- Wonton (Wooton)

Sorry for the stereotypes, I'm just reporting them.

A few weeks ago I posted "Wonton" and the post was deleted within a half hour.
