We have been fairly happy with Northwood. While there is no IB program, there are a lot of honors and AP classes available. Unlike almost any other MCPS high school, Northwood students take 8 classes instead of 7, with 4 of them each day with lunch in the middle. That's good and bad. They have the opportunity to explore more classes, but by senior year many students have nearly all the credits they need to graduate and take an abbreviated day. In addition, all 1400 students have lunch at 10:25,  so it's horribly crowded and early. There was a well-publicized stabbing incident during lunch last month, which was kind of unnerving. The student who was stabbed did not have serious injuries. But this and a few other isolated incidences of violence do make me somewhat concerned about safety.

The principal is very hands on and devoted to the students and responsive to parents.

From what I've seen, there's a top-rate musical theater program, although DD is not involved in it.[/quote]
