I contend that making travel anything, but mostly soccer in Vienna is simply a given for the striving, competitive parents who also have a do or die approach to choosing the right school, program, camp, college. These are also the biggest loudmouth screamers joysticking on the sidelines.

So travel at the 3rd grade level is merely a product of overly competitive parents? I just want to make sure I understand your statement.

Well overly competitive ANYTHING is not a condition that afflicts VYS.

I'm happy with what I've seen in the last 2 years at VYS. We are competitive but there has been more emphasis on player development than winning.

I don't understand when you say competitive. competitive with whom exactly? VYS has not moved into more competitive leagues or have dominating teams and that has been the case forever. I measure a program being competitive if , you know, its on par with its competitors. Should VYS strive to be more like BRYC, Mclean, Arlington FCV and their top teams? or is being on par with those clubs silver and gold teams sufficient?

Personally, I think it's sufficient, but let's not forget that VYS does have a team that's ranked much, much higher than the McLean and BRYC ECNL teams in that age group. It's like 275 spots higher than BRYC nationally. Would that fit your definition of "competitive" or no?

Ok thats only one team though. There needs to be more consistency. Why is it only one team out of the many that does well. Overall as a club, they arent competitive compared to their neighboring clubs

I think Hank did a great job with the team and he should take full credit of their development!

One team? Really? Just one? That is blind squirrel and a nut territory right there.

Yes, in that specific case.

The girls Phoenix 04 team won a tournament this weekend. They are doing much better than last year in VPL since they got some new players fleeing a bad McLean coach.

I assume you're talking about the 99s and if you think that VYS could beat the McLean ECNL team that went 14-0 in league play, you're completely clueless. Just take a look of the difference in the quality of colleges that the players on each team are committed to instead of some website's rankings, and you'd see that McLean would crush VYS.

So your point is that VYS sucks?
Thanks for your opinion. Your complaint has been noted.

Though, people still sign their kids up for VYS and the club is far from collapsing. Go figure?

VYS is not collapsing but it is not the same anymore. Less quality of players, programs and coaches overall. Just became a very expensive babysitter! We are glad that we can afford.

Well, not much has changed with VYS in a while except that a random team here and there manages to perform better than usual. This status quo situation may be a condemnation in itself, but the idea that things are somehow going downhill just isn't accurate. The players are the players. The travel coaching roster is probably stronger right now than it was five years ago. There are more and more "programs" of one kind or another. Still, I, too, am glad you can afford.

It is a family-centric club. Not team-centric or player-centric, but family-centric.

Let's be honest! We do not have better coaches than five years ago. But the coaches today are ok. We have more programs but not the same quality as before. We are average club overall and parents are ok with that.

A lot of programs/ clubs are a mess. No loyalty. Disgruntled parents running on boards. Pay to play. If you are going pay, why not go to the Wash Spirit at lake Fairfax hosted by the great falls Reston merger. That's a professional organization no BS board or politics. They have a U9-12 program now that is being run by Jane Dawber who used to be at VYS. For the boys, Loudoun is a well oiled machine. If you just want your kid to play and enjoy the sport, play rec and do some supplemental programs like HP Elite.

Give examples, don’t generalize.

Alexandria really prides itself on serving the community and being a community-centric club...why can't we play soccer like those teams?
