Is Dexter not for the squeamish?

I've seen the series Dexter mentioned in several threads. It looks good, but I'm worried it's going to be disturbing and/or gross. I think disturbing is worse for me than bloody. Any input from those who have seen it?

It's more gross than disturbing. The first season, I think, was the most graphic by far. I don't like a lot of blood and guts or violence in my entertainment, yet I love Dexter. If you can get past the bloodiness when you first start watching, it's highly entertaining and worth it.

He's such an interesting and sympathetic character, so the blood is not gratuitous. There's also a lot of good humor and other character development. His sister is one of my favorite TV characters. Highly recommend.

It's not as disturbing as some CSI episodes. I also love the show but if you get uncomfortable by a lot of blood or idea of blood, you might want a blanket nearby to cover your face

PP again. Just want to add that it's not really disturbing emotionally at all. Certainly not even close to the disturbing storylines on shows like Law and Order SVU. The victims in Dexter are almost exclusively adults, most of them bad guys themselves. (Dexter himself only kills other killers.)

To me the characters are fascinating and the gore is secondary. Plus you find yourself in an awkward spot on how you like Dexter, but you know it is vigilantism. The characters and plot lines are well written and developed.

I am terribly squeamish and I love me some Dexter....great characters, great plot......I don't flinch at the blood and guts....I think because there isn't a lot of fear or horror tied into the death scenes....you're not scared out of your mind. On the other hand, I run for the hills when my husband watches a movie like Saw 3, etc.

I like Dexter a lot, although I'm a sucker for pretty much any serial killer show. It's a LOT less disturbing than, say, Criminal Minds.

I watched all the previous seasons and would agree it was more gross than disturbing...until the end of last season. I've only seen the first episode of the current season, and now I'm finding things more disturbing and less enjoyable.

I, too, have watched all the previous seasons and just the first episode of the current season and share your feeling. I hope this season doesn't end up disappointing me. I've been really disappointed in the turn that Weeds has taken lately, and I'm so bummed!

If you like Dexter, try Breaking Bad. Fantastic show.

I'm squeamish but was blown away by Dexter. Give the first few episodes a try. Obviously there's blood but the plot is so clever and the concept of the show so fascinating that I think you'll want to continue to watch.

Agree with all pp's deconstructions... Except that the John Lithgow rape scene in th e bath tub at the beginning of last season was so revolting that I could not bear to watch the show again until he Dex killed him in the end of the season. Agree that CSI is become beyond belief disturbing also L+O SVU --what is it with child victims?? It's too weird. But, yes, I know we keep watching it.

I hate gore, and tons of blood, but I LOVE Dexter. I think the characters are great, and it's fascinating

Shame on you! The OP clearly hasn't watched the show yet and you're already giving spoilers.

It's a phenomenal show, I highly recommend it. A couple of friends who hate seeing blood asked if I recommended it for them and I did--they are all glad they gave it a try. The first season in particular is quite addictive. As for emotional trauma, I found myself quite upset by the turns in the last season. It wasn't the gore, though.
