Uninsured motorist insurance

Anonymous
So, with my policy renewal, my auto insurer is alerting me that I might be underinsured in the event of an accident with an uninsured motorist. When I called the company, it turns out that the coverage limits I have are what my state recommends…so I think they are just trying to squeeze a higher premium out of me.

Any thoughts? Experiences to share?

The state recommendations and requirements are so low that you may never recover anywhere close to your damages if you are in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured motorist. Think about the cost of medical care in the event you are hurt and the value of your car. Do your state minimums cover that? Maybe if you have an old car with minimal value. But not if you have a newer car. And not if you have a hospital stay.

I am also curious to understand in what scenario the uninsured motorist coverage would kick in. Why would I need it at all if I have collision which would cover my car damages regardless of fault and if I have medical insurance which would cover my medical expenses.

What is your car worth in relation to your coverage? You want to make sure you’re covered for the value.

Your medical insurance will expect your car insurance to initially pick up your medical bills. I was surprised to learn this. DS was in an accident and when I took him to be checked for a concussion the provider required me to pay in full and encouraged me to submit to my auto insurance for reimbursement. They wouldn’t submit to CareFirst. On the bright side, auto insurance covered 100% (no deductibles or copays or networks to worry about). Also the auto insurance will cover lost wages which health insurance does not.

There are currently a lot of uninsured motorists driving vehicles in the country.

Collision coverage is primary so it covers damages to your car, the uninsured motorists coverage is redundant here. But it is primary for bodily injuries and lost wages. Once you exhaust that your medical insurance and your short term disability should kick in. Bottom line I don’t see a point of having more uninsured motorist coverage than your out of pocket medical expenses. I guess it is also useful if your work doesn’t have short/long term disability benefits.

I had it and it was totally useless. I got rear ended by someone with no insurance, and int he end I had to get lawyers to fight my own insurance company/

That's the case more often than not. Insurance companies are in the business of denying claims.

Why did your insurance try to deny the claim? On what basis?

PP, please name and shame this company so the rest of us can avoid them!

Yep when you submit medical claims this is why they ask is someone else at fault.
