No Level III email

Anonymous
My child has had subject-specific/Level III AAP in math since 1st grade and we did not get a letter this spring. Kid was 2 points away from Pass Advanced in Math SOL this year. and heard from a friend that only kids who got pass advanced would be allowed to stay in advanced math. Could that be why we haven't received the letter? Would my kid get kicked out b/c of the SOL score?

You should ask the AAP resource teacher (AART) at your school.

Are you thinking they will want him to repeat? I don't think so. What grade is he in now?
Anonymous
No, not repeat, but do regular 5th grade math next instead of advanced 5th. This year was advanced 4th grade math (our school switches kids for math).

Yeah. He’s out.

I think you are correct. I looked at previous years and the emails came late May/early June. Is it too late to reach out to the AART? I am very surprised.

This is surprising to me. Maybe with the new focus on 6th grade algebra they are trying to reduce the number of kids in advanced math/trying to tighten up the criteria?

They are loosening the criteria. The A1H for 6th grade requirements are not hard to hit.

Advanced Math at our school was decided in fall after all the kids had a chance to retake the assessments, the decision also included iReady scores, now MAP, SOL scores, grades, and teacher recommendations. Not all schools tell parents in the spring. I would guess that your kid is fine for math if he was in it this year and got good grades.

They typically add more kids when school starts back up in order to fill the class. Brush up on some math over the summer so he can do well on the BOY math test. I would recommend going on sol pass and doing practice SOLs for whatever the next level math is.

This. Since the criteria vary by school you won't get a solid answer here. But at least at our school subject specific emails were always out by end of May.

Ours is totally useless and does not respond to emails. Glad to hear yours is a source of information for you.

Also, Part Time AAP, what used to be LIII, is different then Advanced Math. They are seperate program.

+1 you can be in either or both. My DC got the PT AAP email last spring for this school year (grade 5). The school made a point to explain that that had nothing to do with placement into advanced math. Then in the spring, they separately decided who would be placed into advanced math.

Sorry, I meet the advanced math notification came in the fall

Subject specific is also not part time AAP. Part time AAP starts in 3 rd grade and a child stays in it unless moving up to full time and can not be removed from it. They do not send annual notification for part time because once you are in then you are in.

Then part time and advanced math are different. Advanced math is school controlled. You have to get this information from your school if child does not have full time placement by committee.
