I’m responsible for setting up a networking event for my job. My boss wants me to schedule it for July 3, but I think that’s an horrible date since a lot of people travel that weekend for the 4th.
What do you think? Would you expect good happy hour attendance on that date? |
A Friday night, on a Federal holiday? No one will attend.
Should it in general never be on a Friday?
Absolutely not. It's a federal holiday and most private sector employees have off too. People are traveling or otherwise want to check out from their jobs and enjoy a long weekend.
That's a hard no. Lots of people have that day off. I believe my kid's camp might have a half day too.
Completely idiotic idea. Is your boss a habitual buffoon?
Your boss is setting you up to fail. Start looking for another job.
Remind your boss that the federal holiday is observed on Friday, July 3. I have to assume your office will follow suit. Be clear that anything scheduled for July 3 will be poorly attended. Is he just trying to keep the cost at a minimum while being able to claim to the execs or Board that a networking event was hosted?
Suggest July 2 instead (which isn't great but at least it's not a federal holiday!).
OP here. Thanks everyone! I will push back. What day of the week in general do you think is best for a work happy hour?
Mon- Wed that week
In general they are a bad idea, but if you must have one then make it early-ish on a Mon-Thurs. Never Friday. Do not emphasize the alcohol element, as people are (rightly) cautious about drinking with coworkers or drinking before commuting. Happy hours are very outmoded, a relic of another time. Plan your networking events for breakfast or lunch instead. |
Traffic will be bad that week and people will be on leave. Suggest the Tues or Wed after the long weekend.
Thursday? Just not Friday for a work HH. |
I wouldn’t even do it Monday July 6. Just no.
