| My son will be in 9th grade at WJ this fall - he's interested in trying out for the JV football team, but I'm unclear on if freshmen are eligible, if it's a tryout sport, when it starts, etc. When I looked at a previous year roster, JV was all sophomores and juniors - he doesn't expect to get much (or any) playing time as a 9th grader, but is very interested in being part of the team. If anyone has information on if it's tryout/no cut, if freshmen are eligible, and when it might start, I'd appreciate it - thank you! |

Yes. Rising freshman are eligible and can play.
There are summer workouts that I believe in the past rising freshman can attend (and likely should if able to in order to get fit and get to know the coaches). It is tryout but I think they try hard to include as many as they have equipment for and that they believe can safely play. Registration for tryouts is in July and there are medical pre clearances before tryouts that you have to turn in. Tryouts are usually about the week before school starts (make sure to get these dates - usually around 8/12, but please double check me). It might be worth emailing the athletic director at WJ to ask about how to sign up for information on football summer workouts. There is a new football coaching staff going into the next year, but they have already started putting out schedules for summer workouts etc. My son had never played before but did summer workouts as much as he was able last summer and had a positive experience in the fall. |

8th graders can now be registered in ParentVue for “conditioning” which is supposed to be done to participate in summer workouts or camps for all of the fall sports. You have to get the MCPS physical form filled out and uploaded or emailed to the athletic director/assistant. Then in July you can sign up in ParentVue for tryouts.
A lot of WJ sports post info on Instagram. I don’t love it, but it is a pretty reliable way to get the info you need. |
| OP here - very helpful, thank you both! |
Is the summer conditioning sign up still open? I only see the signup for fall sports on parentvue under registration. |
| Reach out to their athletic director. |
I think if you click on the fall sports button it will take you to the option to enroll in conditioning but I can’t tell for sure because my kid is already signed up so it’s not showing me the option. But it’s also not showing me the option to sign up for a specific sport (which makes sense because that shouldn’t be available until mid-July). So I’m not 100% sure but if you haven’t tried clicking on 2026-27 Fall Sports you should try that. |
