We are taking a vacation soon and my home bound parents are very excited for us. They want us to take lots of pictures and video so they can live vicariously once we get back. We don’t typically record a lot, but I feel for my parents and am inclined to do so this time for them.
How can I make this happen without feeling like I’m not living in the moment, or like I’m a vlogger or dad with camcorder in 1989 lol |
| I think they're just being polite |
| Is anyone in your group into documenting? I personally hate it while I have family that likes to take a group pic at every meal. for me it would be a chore, but one I would do for a loved one. My advice is try to take some pics and videos, but also remember that if you do not capture a "moment" only you will know. |
No, my mother has asked me numerous times to make sure we record things and can play them for her when we see them next. I think they are genuinely bored and miss traveling. They genuinely want to feel included. |
I was thinking more just taking video on my iPhone, but not making anyone pose or perform, just an open camera recording. But worry I’ll be so focused on recording that I won’t be “in it”, so to speak. |

Hmmm I wouldn’t commit to that. I’d send an itinerary each evening of next day with links to the sites you are visiting, then they can research and read on their own.
When you get back, you can show a few pictures of the places they had interest in. It’s your life. Don’t miss it. |
| It doesn’t take much. Take 4-5 pictures and one or two 1-2 minute videos each day. |
| I’d have her watch YouTube videos of travel vloggers. Lots of great travel content on there! |
| Do you have kids? If so, and they’re old enough, let them do it. One short clip a day with fun voiceovers like Hey grandma/grandpa. We’re on the rail heading to … wish you were here with us. We’ll watch the full video together when we’re back. Oh and we got you cool souvenirs! xo |
| can you just kind of do it in the moment? Just a quick daily facetime on a coffee break and twirl the phone around. Wear ear phones, don't put them on speaker |
| It won’t take much. Just do what you feel like. I would assign this to one of my kids. |
| I take lots of pictures but hardly ever ask people to pose. I would just do that, or ask someone else in the group to do it. |
| I'd take a picture or two each day. |
| I love the idea of having your kids record short video snippets for your parents. That seems like a super cool memory to have, regardless of whether your parents enjoy it or not. |

We FaceTime the grandparents when we travel. We literally take walks on FaceTime and it’s like they are with us.
I always take dozens of pics each day and would text them to the grandparents. They love it. And it’s really not hard. |
