NE Kids in Southern Sororities and Fraternities

Anonymous
The Alabama thread got me wondering about this. The only NE kid I know who went south did not get a bid from any Greek organizations.

Do kids from the NE get into the top Southern Sororities and Fraternities? SAE, KA, Phi Delta as examples, Tri Delta, Theta, Kappa?

Very rare and there is a religious component as well for girls, from what I understand....

The daughter of an acquaintance grew up in an UMC northeastern suburb. Very pretty girl but not up to the standards of top SEC school sororities. Despite being from a very northern family and her parents having gone to school in the northeast, she chose a big SEC school. The mom posted about it constantly on FB.

From what I could tell, she got into a very good sorority. At least the girls look very pretty. And I think she seems to be happy there. I know these sororities have all sorts of rules so for all I know the mom was in the same sorority at her school in the northeast so they had to admit her as a legacy. But it isn't like she is the Flounder (Animal House reference) of the sorority.

This whole process both fascinates and horrifies me.

No AEPi or AEPhi

Chances are low. The prestigious sororities and fraternities are filled with kids from certain high schools and summer camps in those states or adjacent states.

This doesn’t mean they won’t get bids from others and have just as much if not more fun.

Pretty doesn’t mean “good” if good means connected and useful. That said if they are happy then it doesn’t matter.

Being an UMC kid from the NE, she is neither connected nor useful. Unless she is legacy connected, as I noted. And these girls want to surround themselves with other stunning girls. This girl is very pretty, but not stunning. I know almost nothing about the situation but thought she was crazy for making this choice but shows what I know. That is why I generally keep my mouth shut in these situations.

For some reason my FB is set so that I see lots of posts of girls going to these schools who are looking for sorority recs. They create these one pagers about themselves and a list of the 10-15 sororities where they need help. Then it seems like people who might barely even know them offer to support them. It is really weird.

Most of them are very pretty. One girl was quite large and several people posted a term that was similar to "bless her heart" like "pretty girl" or something like that.

Religion definitely plays a part in the south, minus Vandy, Rice and Emory.

How do you show religion? Will they ask? Can't you just lie?

I was in an SEC sorority and it’s not really something anyone would point blank ask, but some sororities are known for having more religious girls and usually it’s a scenario where girls already in the sorority know the PNMs from church, home, etc. and know they fit their mold. It’s a two-way street too. Girls who aren’t religious wouldn’t aim for those houses, and there are plenty of others for them to join.

Touse requires connections from high school, prep school, church, sports, etc. Walking in off the street during rush without knowing anyone and getting a bid is almost unheard of unless you're a celebrity's kid or a legit influencer (not someone with 450 followers who calls yourself an influencer because you post all the time). You can try to build connections on social media your senior year, but without real life social proof you're bumping your odds from about 1% to maybe 5% at best. Mouse you can crack as a rando as long as you're reasonably cool, attractive, and don't embarrass yourself during rush. Bouse will take anyone, but in terms of social cachet it's barely a step above GDI.

This is also somewhat nauseating. Is it like this outside the south, or only the south? Like are the sororities at UC schools just a very different vibe? Or in the NE?
