Taped meetings

Anonymous
A few weeks ago, we had a meeting with the school counselor and main teacher at my DD's school. We were told at the beginning that the meeting was being taped. We are trying to recall some of the things discussed to go over with our daughter as we start various therapies over the summer. Would it be ok to ask the school for a copy of the recording?

Why wouldn't it be? Ask and the worst they can say is "no".

I think it's bizarre they taped it but it is now part of your child's educational record so they should give you access.

In the future. If they record, you record.

Is this at a private school? This seems like a really odd request.

By law, it is your right to get a copy of your child’s educational record. See FERPA, which applies to any school that accepts federal money. That may or not apply to private schools: IME some private schools take federal funding - scholarship money, private placement, environmental $, pandemic $, etc.

An educational record is basically anything that has your kid’s name in or on it.

It’s very easy to record meetings these days: there are many apps that record , transcribe and summarize. JUst write a letter and ask the school for a copy of the recording.
