Great! For those who don't want to click:
Platinum recognition: BASIS Banneker Duke Ellington Jackson Reed McKinley Tech Washington Latin School Without Walls Gold: E.L. Haynes Silver: Columbia Heights EC Bronze: Cardozo |
And for those who don't want to find the criteria the Platinum distinction means at least 50% of students at the school earned at least one 3, 15% of the students took at least 5 AP's (including at least 1 in 9th or 10th grade), and 80% of students took at least 1 AP. |
| It's so thoughtful of the College Board to honor schools that generate a hefty income stream for the College Board! |
Everyone hates the College Board until they realize widespread grade inflation means standardized tests are the only way for kids to distinguish themselves. |
You can’t graduate from BASIS DC unless you meet or exceed all these criteria for Platinum so BASIS is at 100%. |

Am I right in thinking MacArthur hasn't been around long enough to be in this list?
Sorry - new to this whole universe |
Yeah, MacArthur is too new because a big part of this equation depends on the number/exams of “last year’s seniors” (this year’s exams aren’t scored yet). And last year, MacArthur didn’t have any seniors. |
Thank you so much |
| I don’t love the criteria that feel self-serving to college board (specifically at least 15% of students taking 5 AP’s starting in 10th grade) but I do find it reassuring that schools have at least 50 of their seniors having earned at least one 3. To me that tells me there are students sufficiently advanced to succeed in AP’s and that the classes are being taught with sufficient fidelity that students can be successful. |
That bar is so low for platinum it’s nearly underground. |
+1. |
This is a fair criticism. As are the complaints about the awards criteria being self serving for the college board (and the general distaste with the monopolistic behavior of the AP cartel). That said it explains why if a student can amass a healthy string of 4s and 5s in the core subjects, it can really move the needle college admissions wise. Despite what this board would have you believe, most HS kids are not taking that many APs. and yes, for the super elite snobs amongst you, 12 or 13 4s and 5s are at best table stakes for the 25 or so most selective colleges and universities. But once you get past that list, the rigor they demonstrate carries great weight. |
| Platinum should be 50% score a 4 or 5. A 3 is a low bar for many of thr exams. |
Maybe your standards are warped by the DMV. My well-regarded suburban Connecticut high school is “only” a gold. |
