Incoming freshman who has taken Spanish 1 in MS. Is the advice to start a new world language to avoid taking Spanish 3 at TJ? Is Spanish 3 ok to take in 10th or is it still a pain?

Think carefully before taking a core academic class pass/fail.

This.

1. It sends a message about why you did it.

2. You are compared against your peers (who toughed it out for a grade) in college apps

Switch languages. My son took Spanish at TJ, and it was his hardest class. Seriously, switch languages while you can.

Seriously considering but am worried about the sunk cost of 1 year of Spanish.

My kid did 2 years of Japanese in MS, TJ doesn’t have it, they are starting over. It’s life, they are dealing with it. We don’t like the idea of online learning for them so we have ruled that option out.

Your kid just needs 2 more years of a different language. You can do 2 and 2. No need to start over.

TJ requires 3 years of a language and does not allow the 2 and 2.

Why is your kid not taking Japanese online next year? They just spend a period in the library if they do that.

Online learning is suboptimal and we believe that you should be taking a class to learn not just check a box.
