Thoughts on all these AI tools? Should I tell my kid to use them?

Keep seeing all these advertisements for sites like Kolly.ai, Esai.ai, etc.

What is everyone's thoughts on these sites? They advertise as "leveling the playing field" since counselors can be inaccessible for some, but are they ethical?

I had advised DD to stay away from any AI to edit or work on essays. This includes grammarly. I have this fear that it increases AI detection and take away originality.

What other kids do isn’t my business or my problem. But I don’t want my kids cheating themselves out of learning how to read, write, reason, analyze. AI robs them of that.

It also destroys the environment, steals intellectual property, and hallucinates. It’s being pushed down our throats by the people who stand to make zillions by selling the tools and/or eliminate jobs using AI as an excuse.

Sadly one of the potential great uses for AI is to teach kids how to write. Teachers give close to zero feedback now. The editorial and feedback process is one of the most effective ways to learn how to write.

Except that, due to AI, writing itself has become a useless skill.

I agree with most points on the writing process where writing it by hand is very important to make sure that your voice is heard. But, my daughter has been using Kolly to grade her essay and it's giving some great feedback – way better than the consultant we paid $5k for...

Yes - we did.
In at multiple T10/Ivies.

They don’t rewrite anything; only help with ideas for application these/narrative and positioning for activities.

AI can be beneficial if used the right way. If they don't write for you (which I do not believe they do), then use them - especially if a counselor is too pricey

Like in many things, if you don't adapt, you will get left behind. I think some AI use is necessary to keep up with modern life, even in an education context.

My impression is that admissions officers at certain schools are so anti-AI that they's rather see something less polished because it will sound more "authentic."

Read essays - pay the fee to see a bunch of successful essays. The level of polish is astounding.
