Where to rent a second home in and around NYC (1.5 hours or less)?

Kids are out of the house, and I am considering renting our primary NYC home (a co-op) and renting, later possibly buying, somewhere that is still commutable by car or train (even a long distance commute that we would not want to do every day) near by. I honestly don't know what I want. Some days I imagine a little cabin upstate with acres and views of mountains, and other days I am looking at beachy towns on LI or even the Rockaways. A very modest sized place or even condo with 1 or 2 bedrooms would probably be fine at first to get a feel for an area. If you had to live someplace an hour or so from NYC, where would you look and why? Good schools are not needed obviously. Dh is retired and I work remotely but occasionally need to be in the city for meetings. Kids come back to visit and see friends occasionally and I'd like to be someplace where they can still commute in to the city, even if not ideal. I'm not going to keep a large place for the occasional visits they make at this point. We also have a friend who keeps a place in the city we can rent for holidays as she's usually away, so there's that as well. Ideas? Hamptons? Hudson NY? Long Beach? NJ? I've lived in the same place for so long that its overwhelming to imagine moving, but I think this would be a good first step.

Our second home is in Water Mill, and we love it out there. I know people love to hate on the Hamptons, but once you're tucked away in your house, it can be very peaceful and feel like the country at the beach. Between the Jitney and the LIRR it's easy to the access without a car when you want or need to, and it's also nice that we have friends with places out there that we can socialize with.

This is kind of odd but I know people who have done it - Brighton Beach/Coney Island. There are some nice new developments there and you do not feel like you are in NYC yet can get to Manhattan by subway easily.

Asbury Park, NJ has gotten very popular. Or some of the NJ shore towns closer to the city like Rumson or Atlantic Highlands that have a ferry to the city, but there you are probably paying major taxes to support schools you won't use.

Op, i can see that. I will take a look! I've looked in the Rockaways a bit, and I never thought I would have done that some years ago.

The hamptons are beautiful of course! It can be hard to find a year round rental though.

So pretty. Are there things to do? I don't mean nightlife of course... I go back and forth between wanting a lot of nature, and then realizing I probably still want a local coffee place I can meet people. I'm all over the place, but lately, beach towns have seemed appealing to me
