Kids are out of the house, and I am considering renting our primary NYC home (a co-op) and renting, later possibly buying, somewhere that is still commutable by car or train (even a long distance commute that we would not want to do every day) near by. I honestly don't know what I want. Some days I imagine a little cabin upstate with acres and views of mountains, and other days I am looking at beachy towns on LI or even the Rockaways. A very modest sized place or even condo with 1 or 2 bedrooms would probably be fine at first to get a feel for an area. If you had to live someplace an hour or so from NYC, where would you look and why? Good schools are not needed obviously. Dh is retired and I work remotely but occasionally need to be in the city for meetings. Kids come back to visit and see friends occasionally and I'd like to be someplace where they can still commute in to the city, even if not ideal. I'm not going to keep a large place for the occasional visits they make at this point. We also have a friend who keeps a place in the city we can rent for holidays as she's usually away, so there's that as well. Ideas? Hamptons? Hudson NY? Long Beach? NJ? I've lived in the same place for so long that its overwhelming to imagine moving, but I think this would be a good first step.
