FCPS messed up midyear transcripts—infuriating!

Anonymous
So by now you have seen today’s email about FCPS transcripts and the GPA miscalculation. This error occurred in February when kids were waiting to get college and scholarship decisions. It’s impossible to measure the damage. I certainly hope the explanatory letter and newly corrected transcripts are being sent to everyone’s college list overnight. Some kids are on waitlists. Wonder how long FCPS waited to correct this mistake? I find the blithe letter they sent families infuriating.

What did the letter say? And what was the miscalculation?

Was it at all FCPS schools?

Dear Students,

We are writing to make you aware of a technical error that affected the calculation of your midyear (“seventh semester”) grade point averages (GPA) during the 2025–26 school year.

Due to a processing error in the Student Information System (SIS), Fall semester-only courses during this current 2025-26 school year were inadvertently counted twice. This error does not impact any student with full-year courses only.

Your student record has been reviewed, and your midyear semester GPA has been corrected. The transcript reflecting the corrected GPA is now available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. You do not need to take any action.

We regret any confusion this may have caused and appreciate your understanding. If you have questions or need additional support, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school counselor or Director of Student Services.

Sincerely,

Fairfax County Public Schools

who takes. a .5 semester course as a senior, or am I missing something?

This only hurts if kid did bad during the fall semester in the fall semester only class. But it could also be to your favor. If OP is this upset, I am guessing OPs kid did bad.

We did not get this email, but we are also not taking any 1 semester class.

Even a good grade in a 1-semester elective that isn’t weighted could somewhat “water down” the weighted GPA, but really it would have only a very minimal effect. As you say, the biggest impact will be to students who did poorly in a 1-semester fall elective.

Seniors often take multiple 1-semester classes. And senioritis…not ideal.

In general the tone of the letter is annoying… I suspect it affects a large percentage of senior students, many with weighted classes, and it would be nice if they were a bit more apologetic. Now some kids will see their updated GPA drop. I’d like more than a verbal “shrug” from FCPS.

Do colleges not do their own calculations for mid-year grades like the do for the original application? As long as the letter is correct, is this really that big of an impact for admissions?

It must be very school specific. Our high school doesn’t offer 1 semester classes

Aren't AP Micro/Macro Econ technically two 1-semester courses?
