How to celebrate College graduation

Anonymous
What are you doing to celebrate your son or daughter’s college graduation? Also, will you be giving a gift? Looking for guidance and ideas. Thanks!

You can do whatever you want. Some people give a trip through Europe with cash and a car waiting for them when they come home, some people get a cake from Carvel, some do a backyard party. There's no right, just right for your family.

We did give them gift and took them out for dinner night after graduation day but nothing extravagant as they don't see undergrad degree as a huge accomplishment.

To be honest, unless a student is first generation graduate or had some disability to overcome, high school or college graduations aren't as huge of a deal as some people make it out to be. Do celebrate if you want to but there is no need to do what others are doing.

We attended the ceremony and took him out to dinner.

Gift was $15k to put towards a car. Needed a car to get to his job.

Got a few small items for med school. Will take them out for lunch or dinner.

We did the same but gift was 5k towards a car. $15k is really generous. Our grad was able to start adulthood debt free which in an of itself is a pretty good gift.

How sad that their parents lame attitude wore off on them.

Parents who are paying off undergrad student loans, giving money for grad/professional school, putting down payment for first home etc., are as loving but more practical than parents throwing fancy parties or giving exotic trips or expensive jewelry/watch, so are parents who can't afford much but give hard saved money for security deposit of rental apartment, down payment for an old car, new suit for interviews etc.

There are lots of ways to celebrate, posh parties and lavish gifts aren't a proof of parental love.

An undergrad degree is the floor in our family. Heck even our great grandmothers were college educated.

We will attend his multiple graduations and commencements. We will also take our entire extended family for a fancy dinner and photographs.

No European vacation. We will spend some serious money to set him up in west coast.

Same. A nice dinner or something maybe but graduating from college is the bare minimum expectation.

I think this is a really good point that people, especially in this area, need to realize.

A nice dinner. Their gift was being able to graduate without any loans.
