DoD canceled all union agreements

Anonymous
Is it a good thing or bad for us? Most of the feds at GS-14 and higher are not in unions so tell me pros and cons of this.

Pros - Better work environment. As a supervisor, I had to deal with a lot of BS from unions for employees that don't want to do much and create unnecessary trouble. A lot of union reps are on Govt time and ended up wasting a lot of $s and time. No union pays.

cons - sometimes there are benefits if used in a correct way.

I never found a good use or my union helpful in the issues that I wanted help with. There are a few union reps but they are always in the field or we don't know where they are.

I think the scope of the cancellation only was for the OPM GS/GG series, not for OPM Wage Grade (WG) series.

The WG series covers plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and several other frequently unionized workers.

I have no issues with the WG unions. The GS/GG unions are silly and unneeded.

I agree GS/GG unions are a waste of time and they should cancel all the hours these people "supposedly" work and do nothing.

The anti union sentiment on this board is so ignorant. Unions are the reason you (including unrepresented staff such as managers) have the hours, leave, and benefits you do - what they negotiate becomes the norm. Unions raise the floor for everybody and keep the worst of manager abuse at bay.

And yes, they need to negotiate on work time because the managers wouldn't agree to meet with them after hours.

Govt unions are a polite fiction. It is illegal for them to strike, so what was the leverage they used to negotiate? Political endorsement, most union members vote the way they want not based on union and it is impossible to verify.

NP and the leverage is arbitration if the agency chooses to impose arbitrary and unreasonable conditions. In a normal world the agency would honor such a decision.

After all the illegal actions of the Trump administration against federal employees, unions were the only ones that could fight in court. That’s why Trump is trying to get rid of them. If they were useless, why would Trump care about them?

Whether you liked them or not, you should still be appalled that they are just cancelling an agreed to contract.

+1000. Sure there are bad apples here and there but workers having unified bargaining power is critical to safe working conditions.

So feds got their benefits ... because agency heads are just nice people? LOL.

Negotiating as a group works. Having lobbyists work for you, works. Having people whose job it is to know all the rules, and who have paid time to deal with a situation on your behalf, helps you. That's true even without the power to strike.

Completely untrue. That happened a long time ago and they did their job but in last decade or so, they have been bums sitting around charging tax $s for union work. All that needs to go.

There should not be a political affiliation for Fed unions but we know where most of them lean. Regardless, in this day and age, there should not be any unions in white collar jobs within feds. Managers can't do their jobs because there are too many deadbeats out there.

It wasn't a long time ago, it's all the time including right now. CBAs get negotiated every 1 to 5 years, and manager issues come up all the time. They need to be addressed on working time because of managers. Or are you saying you're willing to meet with your employee and their union rep on your day off?
