Destaffed and new teachers

With the budget cuts, what happens with destaffed teachers? Will they replace new teachers? Are they just placed? What about staff on one year contracts or uncertified teachers? I know of at least three uncertified teachers in the Langley pyramid elementary schools.

Teachers who are destaffed from their school still have a job in FCPS, just in a different school. The destaffed employee is notified by their administration and then there is a window of time where those employees can apply and find a new school to work for (this gives the employee a chance to pick a school that is close to home, the preferred subject area, etc). When that window closes, anyone who hasn't secured a new position is placed by FCPS where they are needed.

in FCPS they will be able to find a different job, in a different school. So its no big deal.

Do the destaffed teachers have the right to bump newer or uncertified teachers?

No. They can only go to a school that has an opening. They can't bump anyone

FCPS has a timeline for this. Schools can agree to take a fresh out of school new hire graduating from a VA state school with an education degree. After that, destaffed personnel are placed at various schools. New applicants to the county (like someone who is moving from another district) can't be hired until after destaffed personnel are placed.

I was destaffed my first year teaching in FCPS. They hold a job fair to match destaffed teachers with open spots. Teachers can apply to schools individually too. My school ended up taking me back, when they received updated registration numbers and slots reopened.

This year many teachers were moved mid year and given no choice on location. Some of the schools were further and gave them a longer commute. They were told this was due to low enrollment numbers.

Fairfax County is huge and there is a wide range in quality of schools. Being destaffed and forced to transfer is a big deal.

As well as a wide range of possible commutes. A teacher living in Reston may not want to drive out to Lorton.

FCPS does not care about people.....the blatant attitude is there are more we can hire if these bodies leave.

So a a person who has never taught before can get placed at school before a teacher with time in Fairfax?!? That seems so wrong for teachers who have experience and time in the county

There are periods of freeze. We were trying to hire for a position and were only allowed to interview destaffed folks for a while.

Maybe the superintendent and school board should have thought harder before changing boundaries because it’s just going to result in more destaffing and make it harder to attract teachers to schools that already stand to lose kids. Idiots.

It does happen. I know personally of situations where a job was taken by a so called "early hire" (a senior in college who had never taught) and the school did this because otherwise they would have been forced to take a destaffed person from another school (sometimes these people are great/sometimes not) and the school felt it was a risk.
