Does anyone hate it when people dismiss state flagship universities like UW Madison or UIUC as less prestigious schools?

Schools like UGA, Purdue, UW Madison, and UIUC are extremely hard to get into now. I know people with straight As and 1500+ SAT scores who got denied from these places, even in-state. For engineering, UIUC has a sub 10% acceptance rate. You have to be a top student to get into these state flagships

The people here are sad prestige chasers so it doesn’t bother me much.

I always dismissed UGA as a party school…until my kid looked at it. I was so impressed when we visited. It can be hard for people whose college experience is limited to Northeastern Ivies and SLAC’s to accept that there’s a big world of colleges out there and there are super smart kids at hundreds of colleges and universities- not just at the T-50.

How is it you know “people” who reside in Ga, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois at all…not to mention ones who were rejected at these colleges?

FWIW, my OOS kid with a 1400 was accepted at UGA and given $10k of merit $$$s to boot.

Some people submit shitty applications.

Employers are perfectly aware of engineering students at UIUC and Purdue. Maybe Aunt Cathy isn't aware of what it takes. But do we really care about Aunt Cathy's opinions?

I don't know why people are responding to threads like this. It's such an obvious troll job. Don't respond and it will fall to page 20.

Not true: only for CS.

UW Madison is a great school that’s surprisingly easy to get into. UIUC too, if not CS. UGA is a tier or two below the others.

UW Madison is not easy to get into. It’s acceptance rate is below 20-30%

No, I don't mind. I went to a huge state school. They're so big, OP which means they're not exclusive and no one covers them...
( they're not good for bragging rights because everyone knows someone who went there).

I think because it’s somewhat major dependent and also people are unaware.

My old neighbor in Bethesda’s kid was studying CS at UIUC when my son was younger. I knew nothing about it and wondered why you would go to college a corn field. Now, my own child is in high school I know about CS and business at UIUC. I am like blown away that my neighbors kid got in. They are crazy successful now.

It is annoying. For UMD we have people at the same time:
1. complaining that it's too hard to get into
2. putting down kids that choose to attend

Which is it?

These schools are not hard to get into except for engineering at Purdue and UIUC, and even then Purdue is easier.
