How is this even up for debate?! There have been numerous gatherings of juveniles at night that have devolved into violence, yet we are supposed to just accept this? Why exactly does your child need to be gathering with other teens at night without supervision in Navy Yard? It’s nonsense like this that allows Republicans to say DC should be under federal control.

| Much needed. One of the few things of value Bowser did as mayor. |
| I think the issue is with the 8 pm curfew for the Navy Yard, not the 11 pm curfew that is DC-wide. I can understand objection to that as well as allegations that it is targeting black youth. 8 pm does seem a bit Draconian and perhaps they could explore other options like gradually extending it to see whether any issues re-occur. If not, they could have a later curfew in the area. |
| First Amendment. |

Are black youth being targeted by police, or is it just that the youth present after curfew are black?
8 pm is early, but there has been plenty of youth crime around Navy Yard, and an ounce of prevention is worth of pound of cure. They can still enjoy the area at night— with an adult. |
The issues continue to occur, there was just a large gathering 2 weeks ago that ended in violence. The way this is going to end is so predictable. The ability to set up these extended curfew zones will be allowed to expire by the DC Council. The very next weekend there will be a large group of teens that wreaks havoc and creates an unsafe situation in Navy Yard or the U Street corridor. Trump says DC is not capable of governing itself and again steps in. |
“Shouting “FIRE!” in a crowded theater” January 6th Protestors Inciting a riot Threatening to murder someone Underage pornography There’s plenty of restrictions on the First Amendment already. Banning minors from their right to freedom of association or freedom of assembly is entirely within reason under the circumstances we’ve seen lately. |

Let them run wild.
Survival of the fittest. A few deaths and everyone will figure it out. |
|
Have dump trucks empty out loads of swords, clubs and spears where they gather. Or hundreds of loaded handguns.
Then have police leave the area. Nature will sort it all out. |
They won’t figure it out. They will blame while people and continue their destructive behavior. |

It's so (not) shocking that DCUM has turned into a cesspool of losers fantasizing about teens killing each other.
But go on about how you're not MAGA. |
Jay Jones is my hero. |
These “children” are given opportunities that young people in impoverished countries would think is a dream. They can attend public schools with some of the highest per-pupil spending in the country. They are provided with free meals, donated computers and phones. What do they do with all those advantages presented to them? Do they take the opportunity to study and earn scholarships? Make something of themselves, escape generational poverty and build family wealth? Most don’t. Even when presented with all this “free” assistance, many choose to be delinquents and engage in petty criminality and create mayhem. I’m more progressive than almost anyone here - but these young people are a menace. I could watch them die in cage matches with each other all day long. |
It’s lame that the only insult you have is “you’re MAGA” to people who are understandably tired of dealing with BS all the time. It’s exhausting. |

Surprised there is not more posting in this thread given the ongoing debate over the curfew between Bowser and the council.
I'm a longtime critic of Bowser and have never viewed curfews as a great solution, but find myself firmly on her side and exasperated with the council at this point. Especially after the back and forth in the last week. In particular, I found myself nodding along to these comments from Bowser, criticizing both the council's inaction AND parents over what is happening with these big fights/gatherings of wilding out teens in the city: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1rKsvxP97Q I also found myself particularly frustrated to see my own councilman, Zach Parker, post this Twitter in response to Bowser: https://www.reddit.com/r/washdc/comments/1su1tlt/worst_type_of_people/#lightbox Here's the tweet, for those who don't want to click the link to a Reddit post: "This is offensive. The truth of the matter is the Mayor's strategy has failed. Everyone knows the curfew isn't working. Instead of working to advance alternative solutions *with* the Council, she continues to lob insults and dog whistles that play well to the MAGA base." I was especially impressed at his accusation of using dog whistles in the same sentence that he employs a dog whistle ("MAGA base") to link Bowser to Trump. I will not be voting to re-elect Mr. Parker when he's next up for election. The Council is a joke. It is hard to get me rooting for Bowser, but they did it! |
