| no word. It won't move until after May 1st. VT doesn't care about yield and has plenty of qualified applicants. They will use the WL if needed to shape out the class if needed. |
I know a few who are declining soon so I'm sure there will be movement in the next week or two. |
| Generally VT does use the WL quite a bit but not until after commit day. |
| Totally anecdotal, but it feels like a lot more kids from the Richmond area have accepted VT this year, including my DD. Numbers attending VT from each high school seem a bit higher than I’m used to seeing at this point. I’m curious how much VT will pull from the waitlist this year. Seems like it was a tough admissions year and kids did not get into many of the more prestigious schools as they hoped. |
Thats not exactly how it works... |
|
The CDS for each year will tell you how many people they took from the waitlist each year.
For my waitlisted DC, they never got any Ft the waitlist in 2024. Happy at another school now though. |
Not even remotely close to how it works. |
VT doesn't care about yield? What do you even mean by that? The whole acceptance rate (both in Virginia and OOS) is precisely calibrated based on projected yield. |

What is Virginia Tech’s history of selecting students from the waitlist?
In 2025, we were able to offer 4,485 applicants from the waitlist. In 2024, we were able to offer 1,517 applicants from the waitlist. In 2023, we were unable to offer any applicants from the waitlist. In 2022, we were able to offer 2,458 applicants from the waitlist. In 2021, we were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist. In 2020 we were able to offer 3,961 applicants from the waitlist. In 2019 we were unable to make any offers. As you can see, the number of students ultimately receiving offers from the waitlist is highly unpredictable and varies each year. |
Every year is different. In both 2023 and 2019, they didn't take anyone off the waitlist. |

Is it me or is VT a school where you don't want to be a small fish in a big pond.
It is a huge school with lots of opportunities, but the opportunities seem to be concentrated in the top 20-30% of the class with most others getting something but the bottom 10-20% just struggle. |
VT admits a ton of kids from TJ that have zero chance of attending VT unless they need a free option. |
Sophisticated yield management tools predict the percent of kids that will decline. |
