I'm really upset. I have posted here before ages ago that I have a history of kidney stones and urethral trauma due to an infected stent, with a history of UTIs...took forever to level-set and rid myself of feeling of needing to go 24/7 - pelvic floor therapy, regular therapy, etc.
I began a strength training regimen and dumbly I neglected to mention in my medical history all this urethral stuff since I thought WHAT COULD IT HAVE TO DO with strength!? Oh, everything. She had me brace my stomach and do Kegels to improve my core. I just blindly followed along, this had been in my rearview...and POOF. I have 24/7 UTI symptoms again, peeing in tiny amounts, tinglign in urethra. I could cry. I feel I have set myself back after years. I am so upset. Just coming here to a supportive community (I hope). If anyone has thoughts would love to hear. |

Are you able to locate the providers who helped you before? If so, try to make a quick appointment.
This seems like a repetitive use injury recurrence. You need to figure out what you moved out of place/stretched/tore and get it back in place. |
| This seems simplistic but what are you wearing when you work out? Leggings? I don't have your same medical history but somewhat similar issues and find I cannot wear leggings much or anything with too much compression for very long, it tends to aggravate the symptoms. |
| As a chronic UTI sufferer I feel for you. |
Me too, op! I’m so sorry. |
| Thanks for the heads up. Note to self: strength training is a no go |

It's practically criminal how little attention the pelvic floor gets in the fitness world.
Many things that are supposed to be good for it are actually counter indicated for many people, particularly after giving birth, not just immediately, but even decades later. It's really hard to find out the "right" way to do exercises. |
PS I meant to add to be kind to yourself. Even if you had mentioned it, the odds of your trainer knowing what to do with that info are slim. They may have even tried to adjust your moves and made things even worse. For many people it's just "kegels are the answer," and that's just not true. I don't know the right answer, though. If my feed is any indicator, there are a bunch of people online who will sell you their tried and true method, but I don't know which, if any, are worth it. I feel your pain! |
| OP, my aunt takes a D-mannose+cranberry supplement every day and says it seems to help with keeping her UTIs at bay. |
| This sounds like interstitial cystitis, rather than a UTI. It’s a horrible diagnosis. I’d try to get in with a uro GYN stat. |
| Are you wiping front to back? Changing underwear daily? Avoiding thongs? This seems like a hygiene issue. |
| ^ oh, so unlikely |
|
Kegels on anything but an empty bladder?
I am so sorry. |
| Is it possible the strength training made your pelvic floor too tight? Maybe try a pelvic floor PT |
| I think this is an issue with cleanliness. Are you wiping properly? Making sure to shower after sex and that your partner is also clean? |
