Due 7/4. Just found out today my contract may end in July.So confused and scared about what may happen w/ my benefits.

I’m a w-2 employee for Manpower (based in NY), on a contract for NYU. I’ve been on this contract going on two years. I just got word today that the contract may end in July.

My due date is July 4th, so now I’m a nervous wreck.I called HR and they believed that their maternity leave is state-by-state (NY has very generous maternity leave laws), so they instructed me to call the provider.

I called the provider and according to them it’s not state by state, or so the rep doesn’t believe. I asked her what happens if the contract ends July 1 but I give birth July 4th+? She couldn’t exactly tell me but said as long as I’m on an assignment I should be fine? The rep said I won’t know for sure until I file my claim 30 days prior, which makes absolutely no sense because how could I possibly know that? The one thing the rep did say was I don’t technically get maternity leave through my contractor, only short term disability which is 6 weeks if I give birth vaginally.

I’m reached back out to HR to get to the bottom of this, so I’m just waiting now.

I’m so anxious and a nervous wreck right now. Has anyone gone through this? I’m in VA by the way.

See if you can schedule birth on june 15

As mentioned, you'll need to pay for cobra. It's more expensive, but you get to maintain your current insurance for, I think, 18 months. That is the easiest thing to do.

So sorry this is happening to you, OP. Even though your employer/contract is based in NY, if you don’t live in NY, you’re not eligible for NY State PFL.

You should probably remove all the identifying information you give here.

Do you have a spouse?

Also, yes, a lot of identifying info on your post. Probably doesn’t matter, it you could be more general.

Are you an employee of Manpower?

Why do people say stuff like this? Anything that happens with the op is defined by law not interpretation. So what possible and remote risk is there?

It sounds like you don't understand your benefits. It doesn't matter if you give birth or not before or after since you have no benefits.

get the cobra insurance

I'm confused. You said someone told me your benefits do not include maternity coverage. That means your insurance doesn't cover you anyway, right?? It which case you need additional coverage.

If that's wrong and it does have maternity coverage, your question should be, am I eligible for COBRA?

If not, you need to apply for other insurance.

Oh I re-read. You said you don't get maternity LEAVE. Do you have enough sick or vacation days banked to cover the first few days of July?

You need to be asking whether you will be eligible for COBRA. If not, you need to start looking into how you can apply for Obamacare starting July 1. Look on healthcare.gov. You will need to qualify for a special enrollment period and job loss should cover that but you may need proof.

And btw, if it were up to the Republicans, you wouldn't have these options. You'd be SOL.
