Southwest Pulling out of Dulles and Chicago - cancelling all connecting flights

Anonymous
This seems severe.

Dulles means more BWI and DCA so not catastrophe.

But for folks connecting through ORD and having flights just cancelled seems insane?

We got the email but think our flight connects in Phoenix — did others receive it who also have non-ORD flights?

I thought Southwest mainly used MDW in Chicago? you're saying they aren't going to Ohare anymore?

Good less riff raff at IAD.

Yes. They are pulling of O'Hare, not Chicago.

Southwest sucks the root now. They have lost their way.

I wonder if Dulles is too expensive for them. The budget airlines are all at BWI for a reason.

Lol.

On point.

Southwest has only been flying of O'Hare since 2021. There were Midway-only for a long time. In the DC area, they started with BWI, added Dulles mid-00s, and then added DC in like 2012 or 2013? I can't remember.

This was a defining feature of Southwest for a long time -- creating a more efficient (and thus lower-cost) hub network by sticking to less expensive airports where they could move a ton of flights through.

Of course, the old, reliable, efficient and streamlined Southwest that many of us came to appreciate 20 or so years ago is gone, so I'm not sure it matters. The old system was also based on efficiencies through no assigned seating, no tiered boarding, no special status, no meals on planes, etc. At it's peak, it was a great way to travel with no bells and whistles but with great customer service (always had some of the nicest, most helpful staff in the business) and an on time flight.

Those days are gone though.

They only have 3 flights a day out of Dulles right now, 2 to Denver and 1 to Phoenix. Not some great loss.

I doubt they have many flights out of both of these airports. Midway is their primary airport in Chicago, and they have a lot more flights out of DCA and BWI here.

They always flew mostly out of DCA and BWI.

I live near Dulles and have had a SW companion pass for many many years. We almost always end up flying out of DCA so this isn’t much of a loss. There was barely anything out of IAD anyway. IAD-DEN is probably the only real loss.

I am bummed about losing the Dulles to Denver flight that was at a great time for leaving after work to ski

I take it to visit family a couple time a year. United has had comparable to cheaper flights lately

What a exagerated post title. Sky is falling, losing 2 flights from Dulles. Whoop.
