How stressful is traveling Memorial Day with school that same week?

Anonymous
We did this one time when the kids were so small and one was in preschool. The other was elementary. Now we have one in elementary, one in middle and one in high school.

Am I setting myself up for a terrible week of if I try to book a trip Memorial Day weekend to the beach? Considering locations along the coast but also places like Bermuda.

Are you new to this country, LOL? It’s always been a very busy travel weekend.

Op here. How much stress did the trip add to your week? With school work and schedules, is what I’m asking or attempting to ask.

I’m unsure what you’re asking.

The kids will have Monday off of school, and then resume classes Tu-F, correct?

You’ll take the whole week off of work, correct?

It’s a busy travel holiday, I’m sure you understand this.

But what do you think will be stressful? Making up schoolwork/work?

It will add zero stress to school or work schedules. By Memorial Day, AP exams are over and my high schoolers are coasting. At work, nobody is doing any work that Monday, so I'm not missing anything. Any stress would come from my DCs, who strongly prefer to stay home and make plans with their friends, go to opening weekend at the pool, etc.

I am confused. Do you plan to travel for the entire week or just the weekend? I never took my kids out of school, unless it was a funeral.

Op back. Friday to Monday evening return, I’m essentially wondering if it’s worth the adventure.

If you’ve taken a Memorial Day weekend trip when your kids still had school that week, did it make the week feel much more stressful?

Was it worth it or would you never do it again?

Packing, arriving, enjoying a short trip, but coming back to school and work quickly rather than like Winter or Spring break where there are more days between.

Check your kids’ school calendar. DMV public where we live has a five-day Memorial Day weekend this year (teacher workday is Day #4 and Eid is Day #5).

Should be fine. As long as the travel part of your trip is fairly straightforward like a direct flight or short-ish car ride.

I typically do it because fairfax always has extra days off that weekend. Its 6 days this year!

But i alwyas drive, so no risk of plane issues.

It doesn't make life harder.

When we travel and don't have a buffer day between coming home and returning to work and school it is stressful. The house is messy, we're not really ready for the first day back, etc. I try to at least leave on Friday feeling set for the following week - groceries in the fridge, unpack school bags etc so you're not dealing with that chaos on Monday night.

We usually consider the travel "worth it", but not always. DH has a harder time with it than I do. And of course work and school both have more stressful and less stressful phases. That said, if you're really so anxious about possibly being stressed about returning to life after a Memorial Day weekend holiday I think maybe you should reconsider.
