$7k for logo polo shirts

Anonymous
Shouldn’t teachers know that Taylor would rather buy logo polo shirts than copy paper?

The operating budget should disclose gifts.

And you wonder why MCPS cries that they don’t have any money.

I have no opinion on whether this is a good purchase or not, but there are about 157,000 students in MCPS, so that purchase is equivalent to about 5 cents per student. It might wasteful and sent the wrong signal, but it's not going to make a substantive difference to the overall budget.

So MCPS can waste millions as long as each purchase is only a few thousand dollars. Do you run your household budget that way?

Less than $10 a shirt for staff uniforms and you’re crying over this?

Get a grip OP.

When did you realize you failed basic math?

All these things add up. They aren't going to teachers, they are for central office. How about buying basic supplies like wipes, tissues, pens, paper with that money.

They can pay for it themselves if they want it.

What things add up? How much is MCPS currently spending on salaries? How much on supplies? Transportation? How much on t-shirts?

You can see all of that here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/district/departments/budget/fy27_boe_operatingbudget.pdf

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that whatever budget problems the system has won't be solved by not buying a few tshirts, just as my personal budget problems won't be solved by not buying a few candy bars a month.

As with most things, it is better to keep an open mind before jumping to outrage. Do recipients of the shirts reimburse the district for them? Are there school related reasons for the shirts? Do they make it easier for students to find a teacher during a field trip? Do they make it easier for parents of elementary school kids to know who is a school staff member during the first day of school? Are they swag to improve morale? Do they improve school spirit and foster community, which helps with learning? There is a role (even a need!) for the gadfly combing the budget looking for waste, but this one seems to have so many reasonable explanations.

Yup, we have to pay for polo shirts for band and NJHS, staff can pay for their own polos too.

Do you realize these shirts are for central office, those who make the highest amounts? It all adds up. You may have a high budget but teachers get very little and much lower pay.
