| We're exploring privates for our DC for middle school (7th grade+) and trying to find a good medium between academic, college readiness and social emotional well being (we're hoping to avoid extreme pressure cooker schools). Can anyone share the schools to avoid without necessarily sacrificing solid academics? Thanks in advance. |
| Burke has very solid academics without a lot of pressure. Our very intellectual kid has loved it. Some kids may feel it’s too small but for kids who don’t mind the size it’s a great, well-rounded experience. The school really tries to keep the parents from getting too spun up about college early on in HS and works to create a student-led individualized process. The recently graduated families seem happy. A lot of kids go to SLACs |
| Maret is probably your best option. Could also consider Field, GDS or STA depending on the kid. Avoid NCS and Sidwell. |
| Rapid City Christian School has a good reputation for that. They're in western South Dakota, of course, but since you didn't give any indication of where you live, maybe it's just down the street from your location. |

This is DCUM so it’s obvious you’re asking about the DMV area.
Of course, a lot depends on the kid. But generally speaking, this is how a lot of DC parents tend to describe the different schools in the area. Most pressure cooker: - Sidwell - NCS - STA - GDS - BASIS is a bit different but is known for a very accelerated curriculum and a lot of work Sidwell and GDS in particular tend to come up a lot in conversations about academic intensity. Very strong academically but usually described as slightly more balanced: - Holton - Potomac - Landon - Mart - Stone Ridge Still rigorous, but the vibe tends to be less competitive and more focused on intellectual curiosity and student well-being: - St. Andrew’s - Field - Burke - Washington International |
| It is important to note whether the school has toxic competitive environment. I heard Holton is toxic (girls compete with each other all the time). Washington International has harsh teachers. GDS has academic intensity but has the most positive environment. The kids don’t compete with each other at all. The teachers are extremely caring and supportive. |
Are you in NoVA or DC/MD? The optimal school for you may differ depending on location. |
| Pressure cooker depends as much on the child and class composition as the curriculum. What's good for one, may not be good for another. IMO apply widely and see what offers come out. |
+1! |
Is this High school or middle school? I feel most of these schools are not a pressure cooker for MS? |
If you are trying to find just a private middle school that is not pressure cooker, any of the privates (K-8 and K-12) would be fine for you. If you are interested in private high school as well, then some of those school will especially be pressure cookers during their high school years. |
Not sure I agree with the WIS classification with the IB focus, but the others seem pretty accurate. Potomac might be a higher tier. |
The South Dakota pp is obnoxious but it would help to know generally what geographic area you want, unless DC/MD/VA really doesn’t matter. Without other guidance, I think Maret and SSSAS do a great job of strong academics and less pressure. |
My question also. I'm guessing whenever any of these are described as pressure cooker, it must be referring to upper/high school. Definitely not elementary, maybe by the time of 7th or 8th? |
So many posters on DCUM are just obnoxious. I appreciate South Dakota PP for at least being funny and obnoxious rather than just obnoxious. |
