Osteopenia anyone?

Chime in if you’ve been diagnosed with osteopenia-and what did you do about it? Weights? Infusions? What helped? Age?

53, years. It’s mild.

Just added weights.

What infusions?

My doctor added calcium supplements. I have read calcium supplements aren’t that helpful and too much calcium isn’t good either,I had a repeat Dexa scan a few days ago. We shall see…

For those of you diagnosed, did you have prior indicators? Im interested in getting baseline scan but insurance won't pay.

No but I did have malnutrition due to a GI disorder. Can also be caused by an eating disorder.

Sadly, my former doctor did not recommend anything and I knew very little about the seriousness of the disease at the time. My osteopenia turned into osteoporosis.

I’ve taken Fosomax since 2022, increased my body weight to have a BMI of 18+, lifted weights, and took BoneUp calcium with vitamins K and D.

I prob got this due to a digestive disorder that caused malnutrition.

Current doc said to take the supplements. I would not listen to people who say they do not work because maybe they took them with coffee or not often enough, etc.

Building bone takes a long time but it is worth it not to die from a broken hip.

Results

After 2 years, doc said my DEXA showed an increase in bone. He said it is like my bones are two years younger.

My next DEXA is this month. Doc said if report is good I can go off the medicine. Then we will keep an eye on things to see if I ever need to get back on the medicine.

I am very glad I took Fosomax.

I will have my next DEXA this month. Insurance covers them for every two years.

Diagnosed with osteopenia several years ago. I take a vitamin D supplement and eat a calcium rich diet. Cardiologist recommends to NOT take calcium supplement. Exercise- light weights, hiking, walking.
Due for 3 year follow-up scan this year.

Dx a number of years ago from a Dexa scan that was ordered bc my mother had osteoporosis. I'm 62. Along with the osteopenia, I also have osteoarthritis so bad I've had two joint replacements and high blood pressure even with a good BMI and healthy diet. I do take both vit D and calcium (but at different times of the day) per Dr recommendation.

I've always been active and exercised (run marathon and triathlons) as well as gym weights. Drs are monitoring and osteopenia has held steady. I have some other chronic issues (hello hypothyroidism and glaucoma) so at this point just happy I can still go to the gym and do cardio and a wonky weight program.

So........continuous monitoring, continued exercise and following Drs orders are what I'm doing.

Was on Fosamax for a bit. No infusions. Calcium 600mg + Vit-D3 2x daily. Cardiologist is fine with all of this. Weight bearing exercise helps.

Calcium supplements and walking didn’t help my bone density per a repeat dexa scan. I’m researching good weight bearing exercises. There’s a lot of info and videos out there (YouTube and IG) about particular exercises to improve bone density — it involves strength training plus jumping and bounding to put stress on your frame. Even basic heel drops can help.

My mother was diagnosed with osteopenia around my age, so when I hit menopause my Dr ordered a baseline scan when I asked about prevention. Insurance wouldn't pay but it was only about $200. Super cheap as far as these things go, IME. I think now that I have been diagnosed with osteopenia they're likely to pay for future scans.

Is the concern related to calcium or vitamin D? Or to an interaction with a med you take?

In general, and not for all, it is important to take vit K with vit D to prevent issues.

My doctor, who also holds the PharmD, says to take calcium w vit D and K so I do. And now my osteoporosis is gone.

I'm taking Algaecal Plus plus the Boost. Holding my own at borderline osteopenia despite losing weights time with an injury. Mid-sixties.

Lots of info on their website . Purchased online but found Village Green Apothecary stocks it.
I really trust them. They also reviewed everything I'm taking to make sure the quantities would be good together. I also take extra D.

PP above. Wanted to add that that it was having two falls in one year that caused doctor to order the testing. I was skinny fat so looked fit. Doing progressively heavier weights really helped, even though in actuality they are light.

Anyone here on dcurbanmom with relatives from Japan who took the 45 mg per day of the Menaquinone-4 version of K2 for this condition?

If it works, why do we not do this here?
