IU Kelley

DS attended the Kelley DA day and totally loved the school! We were not expecting to pay out of state tuition because we live in VA and he was admitted to VT. He received a little merit money but it will still be a lot, although we can cover it with his 529 plan. Anyone else leaning towards Kelley?

What did your DS like about Kelley?

Interested to hear about it, OP. My DC was admitted to Kelley for Finance with merit as well. Also admitted to UVA in state. DC is not really interested in visiting Kelley since UVA is ranked higher. I am worried about UVA not being a direct admit into McIntire and think DC should visit Kelley!

Op here - he’s flying back with his dad so I’ll hear more tonight, but it sounds like a supportive environment and the campus is beautiful. That being said, if he was admitted to UVA we would encourage him to go there. I have another child at UVA and Econ or Stat major with a business minor is a great option for students not admitted to McIntire.

Kelley is overrated, especially if OOS.

Go to VT or UVA. Much better value. They will be grateful when the have no debt. Trust me.

This is the PP with a kid accepted UVA in-state and Kelley. Cost isn’t an issue for us, so no debt either way. I keep hearing recruiting is better from Kelley than UVA or VT?

This is good to know. Thanks!

Kelley is fantastic if you get into the IBW. It can be quite cutthroat.

I’m not speaking poorly about IU, but UVA carries a much stronger national brand and a simpler path to an elite grad school.

So the choice is VT or Kelley? I would let him choose Indiana. For one, you can afford it. And two, I do feel students should be able to select the school they prefer. If cost isn’t a consideration, there’s no argument for VT.

Outcomes at Kelley are very good. They teach a lot of soft skills - networking, how to dress, how to present, how to interview. It’s a great program, an awesome town. Checks all the boxes.

We're at MCPS and my daughter got into the business programs at VT, UMD, Indiana, Penn State, Pitt, South Carolina, and Clemson among others. We visited all these and she just fell in love with IU. Beautiful campus, great college town, friendly people, and Kelley is impressive and highly ranked. The professors are super helpful, alumni network is vast, and the job placement rate is great. Yes, tuition would be less at UMD, but she felt at home at IU. That's why she's heading there in the fall.

Your kid should definitely visit IU Kelley. We visited both IU and UVA and the vibes are different. Have your kid pick the one they prefer.

McIntire internal is likely to be 30% this year but kids who don't make it study economics or stats. Just make sure you kid wants to study economics or stats. I'd look at the curriculum. Economics is in fact, 4 years of economics courses which is different than marketing or other majors offered in a business school.

I think the OP is comparing costs while a PP doesn’t have a limit.

Kelley is very strong but it is competitive…hard to get into clubs (even beyond the IB workshops).
