Columbia Likely Letters

DD got one today! I heard others received one too.

To my knowledge, ~200 are sent each year only to RD students.

!! Congratulations to your daughter! She must be a star.. isn't their acceptance rate for RD vanishingly small?!

I don't know whether to ask my son to look at his email now... likely nothing there, but Columbia is at the top of his list.

Congrats again!

Do all accepted receive the letter? Or, what is the criteria?

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Congratulations, it is an amazing school.
Not all of the acceptances receive them, only a handful.

OP here; thank you all!

She has a 3.95 from a top private, near top rigor, 1560 SAT, 36 ACT (both submitted). Unhooked. National awards from YoungArts, Scholastic, and others. English/Creative Writing/American Studies major. Her most important EC was a local project she started that tied closely with her major. She decided to keep most essays private, but she worked with an essay coach, who gave overwhelmingly positive feedback. She is still waiting for a few schools in RD but Columbia is one of her top choices.

Good luck to all!

Why would a university send these? To make sure you don’t accept somewhere else first? Is likely always “accept”?

It is always an accept unless the kid does something that would get their offers rescinded. Likely letters are tactics to boost yield; if a university demonstrates interest and prioritizes a student, they're more likely to accept their offer of admission, as they have time to get excited, do research, and prepare.

Congrats to the OP! The only person I know who received a likely letter from Columbia (this is a few years ago) was accepted to and attended Harvard. So, I think Columbia knows that this student extraordinary and is trying to get them excited to attend Columbia and pick it over all other schools.

DS got one! He also was a named scholar with research money and stuff. Really cool and we are over the moon for him.

The likely letter in the Pick Me of top tier yield.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
