Same. Go back to a regular shampoo, as moisturizing as possible.

My DD has super fine, thin hair but with a naturally oily scalp. The silicon and sulfate free shampoos don't work for her because they don't remove any of the natural oils in her hair, plus they often deposit additional moisturizers on top. So those shampoos just result in build up very quickly, necessitating regular clarifying shampoo, which is harsh and strips her hair. It doesn't work. She needs something that will truly clean her hair (including of excess oil from her scalp) without stripping it. She also needs to be able to shampoo daily. Sometimes she will go 2 days between shampoos, especially mid-winter when the air is drier, but she needs to be able to shampoo daily without the product being too harsh.

After trying a bunch of different products, the one that works best is Pantene Pro-V Moisture Renewal shampoo. For conditioner, we alternate between another Pantene product (Abundant & Strong Conditioner, it's supposed to protect against breakage) and Pureology's Hydrate Sheer, which is a conditioner formulated for fine hair.

And then she air dries with a bit of leave in conditioner (natural hair texture is wavy to curly but can't handle most curl/wave products because it's too fine). Sometimes wears it natural, sometimes does a few passes with a steam straighter on low heat for a more relaxed, smooth wave.

Her hair is really healthy right now.

The simple answer is a double wash.

I use regular shampoo. The sulfate-free ones just don’t work for me.

Sulfate free is a ridiculous marketing effort. People used sulfate shampoos for years and it was great, especially for women with straight fine hair. Sulfate free shampoos seem like they work better for women with thicker and curlier styles.

What kind works for you?

Sulfate free is terrible for my fine hair. I switch between Pantene volume and Dove Intense Repair. My hair has never looked better. It is super healthy now.

For me, it was making my scalp itch like crazy. Your body/scalp changes over the years. After I switched to sulfate free, itch stopped.

How are the roots? Can you wash every other day and still be ok?

I have fine hair and have always done well with L’Oréal everpure sulfate frees. Otherwise, live your life! Use a sulfate-y shampoo!
