| Do mcps require mcps (ES, MS & HS) have at least one OG certified teacher in every school? I am not talking about OG trained, but OG certified to help kids with reading disabilities or dyslexia? Does each school reading specialist normally is OG certified? Is there a website or resources that I can use to search whom is OG certified? |
That's a great question and you might want to cross-post on the students with disabilities forum. It's broader than MCPS but you're more likely to get an answer. Also, the people who post there are much nicer than the ones who post here, LOL! |
| No |
| I really doubt it |
| As the parent of a kid with dyslexia, I hope not. OG does *not* have the evidence base that would demonstrate the need for such a position, no matter how many people think it does. |
| No. And don’t expect the reading specialists to actually work with kids who need help with reading. Most RS have to organize testing, plan trainings, organize intervention groups…they aren’t actually working 1:1 or even in small groups. |
| Nope. I taught special education for years, many of those teaching the reading intervention. In my 20+ years of teaching, I think I was trained on 10+ reading interventions. They don't have the staffing to teaching OG with fidelity. I would go to trainings where they would tell me I needed to see students 5 days a week for 1 hour, except in MS classes are barely 45 minutes. Or that it should be one-on-one or some other small number, yet my classes were 10+ students. Not hard to figure out why these interventions don't work. |
Where is that happening? The RS at my school would NEVER. |
My former Chicago suburban school was like this. The RS did work with kids some, but at least half of the time was spent doing things that had nothing to do with helping kids. Our curriculum director was and is useless. |
What would you suggest for a credential or certification for teaching kids with dyslexia to read? |
| My kids MCPS ES seemed unable to even speak the word dyslexia at my son's IEP meetings |
And they likely won’t. If you suspect dyslexia, get outside testing done. If your child is dyslexic I recommend looking into Sienna or the Lab School. If that’s not an option, get a tutor that is skilled in dyslexia remediation. If you get a private tutor, your child can still participate in sped or a reading intervention (think of it as a bonus, do NOT depend on MCPS to remediate the deficit. There are way too many students who need help — and yes, I know a lot of it is a Tier 1 issue but I would not wait for MCPS to get it together. |
| MCPS schools should have at least 1 OG trained staff member in the building. They do not pay for OG certification, so it’s unlikely a building will have a certified interventionist, but there are some people who pursue that on their own. ASDEC and IMSE both have tutors listed on their websites that are certified. |
Why does mcps choose not to pay for OG certification? So reading specialist at the school is not OG trained or certified? If not, what does reading specialist do or specialize in? I hear many kids in MCPS fail reading or language testing, and I do not understand why not train specialist teachers. |
They do pay for OG training, just not OG certification which is a far more extensive thing |
