Is VT non-engineering a tougher admit than JMU from Fairfax County?

I'd appreciate hearing views/experience from FCPS parents on this issue. In the past, if anything, JMU was the tougher admit, but that seems to have reversed . . .

I don’t know of a time when JMU admission was more difficult than Virginia Tech - maybe 30+ years ago?

Well, it's a subject of some debate on another thread, where a poster is insisting that if you're not engineering it's just as easy to get into Tech than JMU. I find that hard to believe, which is why I'm asking.

VT admits by major/college, so there are certain majors where it is easier to get into VT than JMU. For example, it is probably easier for a weaker student to get into VT to study Forestry or Early Childhood Development than to get into JMU.

But are there actual numbers that support this? Or is what you're suggesting an educated guess? JMU's overall admit rate is so much higher and its yield, test scores and GPAs re just so much lower than Tech.

VT has some of the most comprehensive data on admissions by major.

https://udc.vt.edu/irdata/data/students/admission/index#university

Warning, best viewed on a PC. (Not a phone or tablet)

I think VT engineering and the business school are both competitive. Naviance for your school is the best source of info though.

One anecdotal data point: my FCPS DC 2023, 4.1W gpa, 1380 sat (710 math), 8 APs, was waitlisted for business at VT and never got off the waitlist, but was admitted to JMU honors college.

Yea, I looked it up but don't have a PC, only a tablet. What do the numbers say for arts and sciences?

PP here, and ok I figured it out. I'm not seeing any numbers for any college within VT suggesting that admissions to any is easier than JMU.

If you drill down into individual majors, there are majors with 75%+ admit rates, which would be easier to get into than JMU overall but probably not for comparable majors. Also, clicking through to look at several majors, there's a pretty consistent downward trend in VT admit rates. My son's major had about an 80% in-state admit rate when he was accepted but now it's 53%. So the "easier than JMU for some majors" perception may now be outdated.

Here's JMU's site for looking at admit rates by major https://www.jmu.edu/pair/ir/factbook/ad-01.shtml

For an example in-state admit rate at VT for Mathematics (in College of Science) was 89% last year. It was similar, 88%, at JMU.

What is odd is that DS received a little merit money from VT but nothing from JMU

Nothing matters except stats from your own FCPS high school
"Overall" statistics mean nothing for admittance from FCPS

This is true.

These two schools generally don't give merit aid. They do give need based financial aid.

VT puts a lot of weight on their own essays on application. A strong student who doesn’t do well on them, can easily get rejected.

Interesting, because someone posted on here that their child was offered full merit at JMU and was deciding between that college and UVA, so I thought JMU might offer a little merit like VT did
