Spring Sports tryouts with snow

Anonymous
Every year this is an issue. Northeast schools purposely starts after Labor Day so spring sports have equal time as the other sports. And Virginia sports run much longer going into mid June.

Why does MCPS have such a short window for spring sports. Fall gets 2-3 weeks of practices before school even opens and winter sports is Nov to early/mid March. For some reason Spring sports is March to the first week of May. And that includes 10 days lost to Sprinv Break. Not even 2 full months.

I just can’t see how sports on grass will even happen this season. How do they run tryouts? They are calling for more snow on Monday and the rain and wet grass are so bad until usually mid April.

New England-er checking in. We used to do spring try-outs in the gym because there was still snow on the ground. Your precious will survive.

I seriously doubt athletics were a reason for a post-Labor Day start time. What a ridiculous suggestion.

The fall sports window is longer because you can only safely play one football game a week. All other team sports allow for 2-3 games per week so you can have a shorter calendar window to get the same number of games in. We have 3 weeks of practices in the spring before the state mandated opening day of March 20th.

I lived in MA and our Spring sports were tryouts mid March and the season was until end of June, sometimes playing in the playoffs after school ended.

MCPS having “Spring” tryouts in February is ridiculous and if people want them to start earlier in August, it will only get pushed back to mid February

Also, just be aware, these season windows are determined at the state level and not the county level.

Yes spring sports always get the shaft. I have no idea why they don't put softball and baseball in the Fall when they have more time and decent field conditions. Many states that start in Aug and end in May put those sports in the Fall.

Space to practice and have games is the issue I assume.

Yeah. At my school, JV football uses the baseball field for practice every day in the fall

Baseball is always in the spring - public and private. Unlike the snow day policy, MCPS is not doing anything differently.

I agree that baseball/softball should be in spring mostly because of tradition but also because they balance sports across seasons. but I hate that the season is so compressed. our schedule shows 3 games per week-- one to two of them require missing at least last period to get ready. It's just oo hard on academics. I love the fall schedule because it starts before school begins and anyway the first couple of weeks of school are easy, so less academic disruption.

I absolutely agree. Many states smartly put dirt sports in the fall because “spring” in March and April is just soggy wet fields for no play or injuries. Ending the already shorten season the first week of May when school is going on until the end of June isn’t right either.

I have a girl in softball and “tryouts” were this week and it’s just a joke. That field won’t be playable until at least mid next week. It’s flooded right now and 4 more days of rain. And since playoffs are still going on in winter sports, they can’t use the gym either. It’s extremely frustrating.

They could move soccer or field hockey to spring since it’s all on turf. Why does Fall have 3 turf sports and Spring has one?

HS Soccer would never move to the Spring because most of these kids play high level club soccer in the spring. Field Hockey moving to the spring would also be a poor move because the player overlap with lacrosse is too great.
