| Am I missing something? I heard so much about it from others and wanted to like it but I really didn’t. If the premise is “ everyone has a story” and take the time to listen” — sure that’s nice but it just seemed so contrived, simplistic dialogue, cliched. Oh well, the author seems like a nice man and happy for him being discovered late in life. |
| I wanted to like it but just didn't. It was too preachy and religious for my taste, boring in parts and I found the characters unrealistic and one dimensional. Now, The Correspondant, that book deserved the hype imo. |
|
Very one dimensional. And preachy, black and white characters.
The people who like this prob like Kristin Hannah books. |

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one! I got about 2/3 through and didn’t finish. I kept waiting for something to exciting but it didn’t. Came across as preachy and “easy reader” ish.
Can anyone who finished please share if there was an “aha moment”/any twist at the end? Did I miss something by not finishing? |

I just posted about this on the March thread! I thought the writing was beautiful but didn't always love the dialogue. Much of the middle was bloated and really dragged on for me.
To the Kristin Hannah poster, I *hated* The Women so much that I will never read another Kristin Hannah book. Maybe you're onto something! |
| It’s for religious people |
| I think it’s the first ever book that I loved at first and felt meh about by the end. It kinda dragged, was predictable and I didn’t like the ending. |
| I am laughing out loud about the Kristen Hannah/Women comment as this is SPOT ON! A friend who also loved it has reread The Women as it is a favorite book. Should have been a warning! I am half way through Theo the Golden and at first was thinking this could be a five star. I’m half way and can’t wait for it to end as it is going no where and I can already predict the ending. I will finish it as it’s for book club. |
You are my person! |

This made me smile! And pardon the crappy writing in the post. I was about to get on a work meeting lol
If only we could start a book club! |
| I also liked it at first but the middle was a slog. I was surprised by the religious overtones (not even undertones as it was very explicit). I am happy for the author but it was not my favorite book. |
This is me too. At least it's not as long as The Women? I am audibly groaning with every saccharine sweet new interaction full of stereotypes about "others". The same way I groaned while old dead lovers kept popping back up in The Women. I feel like I would have loved this book in middle school when I was an avid church youth group attendee from a rich white neighborhood. |
| I thought there was something wrong with me… I had heard so much about Kristin Hannah. The Women was the first of hers that I tried. I found it trite, predictable… I read a few chapters but DNF. |
Oh no...I hate Kristen Hannah but my MIL (who I love) gave me Theo of Golden so I feel like I have to read it. |
Kristin Hannah is the new Jodi Picoult. |
