DD16 desperately wants to visit NYC, and I think we can make it work this summer.
We’d fly in on a Thursday evening (after work) and depart Sunday morning, most likely. DH and I want to see the 9/11 memorial, walk The High Line, maybe see the Occulus/Hudson Yards (I understand they are all in the general same area.) DD wants to see Times Square and “shop”, though I don’t know that there’s any particular store she is interested in other than the flagship Brandy Melville store. How else would you fill your time, or what would you recommend? Where would you stay? Logistics? (We aren’t interested in museums (other than 9/11) on this trip.) |
| Train don't fly. |
+1 for train from dc. everything you listed is totally doable in a weekend. You could even see a show while you’re near times square. |
I should have mentioned we aren’t interested DC! Sorry! |
|
Yes, are you coming from DC? Then definitely take the train.
If your child wants to shop, Chelsea and Soho have a lot of trendy retailers. The East Village and those two neighborhoods have really good thrift stores. If it's summer, I'd do the Circle Line boat cruise, or even just a ferry ride. And I would definitely see a show. If you have time, add another day. You'll never run out of things to do. |
| The 9/11 museum is weird. There are so many great museums in NYC, just go see the outdoor memorial site and save the museum itself for another trip. |
| Stay in Times Square. |
No? Weird? That’s a weird take. I’ve never heard this from anyone else who has visited and reported back. I’ve heard it’s one of the most well done experiences ever. |
Weird? Horrifying take. |
| Yes, that seems like enough time for what you want to do. I haven’t flown to NYC in a while but I found LaGuardia the easiest airport to deal with when I did fly there more regularly. You could stay in lower Manhattan, Times Square, maybe Chelsea, lots of options. One thing to note is that NYC can be hot and sometimes unpleasant in the summer—it’s a heat island and there can be lots of trash. The subway is a great way to get around but very hot in the summer. |

I would add food to the plan.
You have three lunches/dinners. I would make them one pizza, one ethic food you don’t often eat, and one at a trendy/tik tok famous type food place. And I would get a bagel for Saturday breakfast. |
Agree with this. Train drops you off in Midtown. So much easier than flying. For other things to do and I’m assuming this is a first visit, otherwise you wouldn’t be asking.. -walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. -visit Times Square at night when it’s lit up. I’m not a Times Square fan, but you have to see it at least once at night. -go to a show -eat! NYC is a great food city and you will probably be walking a lot, so you will earn those calories. -go to Central Park -go up Empire State Building or Rockefeller Building -we like going to some of the ethnic neighborhoods. Chinatown and Little Italy are right next to each other, in Lower Manhattan. Chinatown is great, I think there is a more authentic Italian neighborhood in the Bronx, but probably not worth going all the way there. We also like K-Town, which is near Empire State Building |
| depending on budget and your vibe, stay in times square (tourist central) or chelsea. If you are up for the subway, anywhere on the west side would be fine and easily reachable by train. |
Sounds like you haven't experienced it, so, hard to have an opinion. |
We like staying in Chelsea. It’s quiet, for NYC, and a little cheaper. We have also stayed in Times Square West, which actually isn’t part of Times Square and is closer to Penn Station/Mounihsn Train Hall. We always try to stay within ten blocks of the train station…makes arrival and departure easy. |
