I have a 16 year old that eats a limited diet of burgers, fried chicken, pizza and tacos. He's ripped with a 6 pack and hasn't worked out since last summer.
Really. All the BS about genetics having zero roll in this...come on. It's like 99% genetics. |

Genetics are a major factor, but not the only factor.
I come from a large family. Some people are obese even when they diet and really work at losing weight. Some people are thin even when they eat whatever they want. I do think stress and mental health plays a much bigger role in weight than most people understand. I wish that was discussed more, because when I think of the family members I know who struggle the most with weight, they pretty much all also have serious mental health issues, and it feels like there should be more support to address both those things at once, because they clearly seem linked. I do agree with you that the idea that weight is just about personal choices and will power is really misguided. But it's not just genes, there are other issues at play (though not always things that individuals have control over or can just power through). |
| I was born with a fat ass. I did ballet four hours a day for months plus swimming and tennis and ate normally and the same as friends who had smaller frames than me. I come from hearty women on both sides of my family. Larger frames, and it didn’t matter how active. |
| Another thing people don’t understand: hunger is genetic. Maybe naturally thin people have faster metabolisms, bit more often I think they are genetically predisposed to having softer hunger cues. As GLP1s are showing, hunger is king. |
Having a six pack because you are thin with a high metabolism is not the same as being ripped. Think a young Brad Pitt who is certainly blessed with genetics vs fight club or Troy BP but I get your point. I hope he improves that diet. If he starts adding beer to the mix in college that will change quickly. |

- I doubt anybody has ever claimed genetics have no impact on weight
- 16 year old has a body composition that supports what they are eating, that’ll change soon enough if they don’t work at it. Muscle tissue is expensive - middled age women who have spent decades with “treat yourself” have the opposite body composition and want to act as if poor health and body weight are inflicted on them like an uncontrollable pestilence |
| If your 16 year old keeps up this kind of eating, imagine him at 40 or 50. |
| 16 is not an adult. You have to understand that little bit of data at least. |
16 year old has had a 6 pack for many years without specific gym routines or any effort at all. As someone that's struggled my whole life with weight, it just hit me, as he eats his weight in pizza, that he's basically undeniable evidence that this isn't some kind of - oh well you need to do more abdominal exercises or have more self-control. |
Yes, so none of this is by design or effort that an adult would do (diet & excercise). |
Yeah there's no sort of biological change that happens to women right at middle age that would affect their weight. It just happens at that age cause they all treated themselves. There's no other explanation! |

All my obese friends were abused as children, ind is anorexic.
My aupair gained 15 lbs her 1st 3 months here. There is something wrong with our food in the US. She lost it when she lived home without trying, |
All of this. Mr. Son won't be able to continue eating as such. Nope |
I agree with this. I actually applaud the administration for looking into it. Maybe it’s just portion sizes and I’m sure that doesn’t help but I don’t think that’s all of it. |
Sadly this admin is not “looking into it” they said drinking alcohol was healthy because it gets rid of loneliness. They are loons. There are private industry pre looking into it though.., oh wait their grants were cancelled. |
