'They are the type of people who don't do well at large corporations"

This is how the group who started a local consulting firm were described in a Crain's article. What comes to mind about these individuals when you read that?

They struggle with keeping their mouths shut, so they developed a startup so they can say whatever they want.

I don’t think either group or type is better than the other, by the way. I am a corporate drone working for a large corporation but have worked at startups operated by people like those in the article.

It all sucks.

Out of box thinkers. Non conforming. Probably highly intelligence. People who excel at large corporations are rule followers who probably did well at school.

Competent but socially maladjusted.

TBH, a lot of people don’t do well at large corporations doing desk jobs in person.
I know a few people who thrive and love it.
They are in the minority. Lots of people lie to themselves and try to love it but many of them are in denial.
So. People who might not do well:
Introverts
People who like being physically active and or working with their hands
People who want to really make a difference
People who want flexibility
People who just can’t or won’t drink the corporate koolaid
People who hate all the meaningless jargon and buzzwords

No way. The rule followers don't fit in. The backstabbing, work stealing, management ass kissers, and smooth talkers do well in corporations.

It makes me think those people are not jerks.

Why do you think they did so well at school?

I understand this as "neurodivergent" - meaning, not wanting to take stupid corporate practices and abuses lying down, not wanting to boot-lick for years to get to the top, yet willing to work hard and put in the sweat equity, but in their own way.

The key differentiator is appetite for risk

No patience for bureaucracy. Don't like following someone else's rules. Willing to take risk. Want full freedom to do things their own way.

Nothing good. I'm picturing too cool for school types who are trying very hard to convince me that they are *~special~*
