Most walkable will probably be the townhome communities that are right at the metro. Pull up a map of the metro and zoom out around there and identify them. You can also check a map area on Redfin or Zillow.

There's very little near the Vienna Metro station that's walkable. It was designed more for commuters than walkers. 15:57 has it right.

Are those communities walking distance to grocery stores too or at least a restaurant or 2? Is it safe walking around there?

It's safe enough but the types of amenities you're seeking aren't currently available yet within walking distance of the Vienna Metro. If they are important to you, you'd be better served looking for something near a different Metro station (for example, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, Ballston, Clarendon, etc.). There's a Harris Teeter near Dunn Loring, a Giant near West Falls Church, and grocery stores and restaurants near the Arlington stations as well.

I lived in the Covington townhouse development near Vienna. It was about a mile to metro, there was a decent shopping area with a Safeway even closer, and mosaic district was just a bit farther away.

It's a very nice area (and not cheap), but walkable to restaurants and grocery stores? That would be a stretch. If you plan to commute via Metro, it's still worth considering because of the savings (no parking charges).

I thought you meant walkable to the Metro. If you’re looking for a walkable community, like walkable to shops and restaurants and stuff, that’s not gonna be near the Vienna Metro. The Vienna Metro is kind of in the middle of nowhere with townhomes surrounding it for people who want to be close to the Metro. If you want to actually walkable to restaurants, etc., that’s Church Street in Vienna. Around there. That’s a good long drive from the Metro.

The townhouses off 29 behind the Safeway are walkable to restaurants and grocery and the metro. They are 1970s built and small, no garages. Here's one for rent: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2909-Piney-Grove-Ct-Fairfax-VA-22031/51807097_zpid/?utm_campaign=zillowwebmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare

A little bit further (bike would be better to metro) are https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/9269-Bailey-Ln-Fairfax-VA-22031/51806481_zpid/ and https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2928-Hunter-Rd-Fairfax-VA-22031/51806208_zpid/

Lots of walkable housing and shopping options are near the Dunn Loring MetroRail station, which is just 1 stop east of Vienna Metro.

Vienna MetroRail station is not the most walkable, as others already observed.

You can either walk to the metro or walk to the grocery and restaurants. Pick one. I would choose metro.

Yeah, I think the Dunn Loring metro would be a much better bet for the things you're looking for.
