MCPS just voted to revoke the charter of MBLI

Anonymous
Just happened in the BOE Business Meeting right now on 2/19/26.

Brenda proposed an amendment to give an extension until Dec, but Rita fought back and said no. She pointed out that the norm for an MCPS school that is not in compliance to have a remediation plan and many of those plans last for up to a year. And even after the plan, many still continue to operate while not being in compliance.

The SMOB flip-flopped from supporting Brenda's extension amendment to then joining Karla, Laura, Julie and Rita in voting to revoke the school's charter after 3 months of operation.

Technically, MBLI could submit a response to this revocation by Mar. 30 and the board could be satisfied and not move forward with closing the school.

But it's clear that the BOE wanted to punish MBLI despite the organized protest from parents, staff and students, and despite the obvious disparity in how it's punishing MBLI for being noncompliant versus other MCPS schools.

Important note: The only reason MBLI exists is because the State BOE forced MCPS to let them open. MCPS is trying to smother charters because they don't want the competition.

What's MBLI?

And maybe because they disclosed confidential student information to the media.

I love the idea of a charter school here in MCPS but this company has just proven to be very bad at what they do.

So did Blair High School: https://bethesdamagazine.com/2025/06/13/mcps-student-privacy-montgomery-blair/

Are we planning on closing Blair HS over it?

The Mecca Business Learning Institute that is in Germantown. It's eventually supposed to be a 6-12 school but currently is just grades 6-7

Have you seen the proficiency scores at MCPS?

Also, MCPS has a lot of nerve talking about a lack of special ed compliance when Taylor admitted that MCPS has NOT been meeting special ed requirements for YEARS.

Enrollment for MBLI has plummeted- someone may need to correct my numbers, but I think they said from a recent meeting 120 students have left, and enrollment is 83 students? I thought they started with over 250?

Correct. Enrollment plummeted due to being in Bethesda at a holding school and then losing transportation support.

How is that the conclusion you're drawing from this?

I will say, the CEO of the school does not inspire a lot of confidence, but it appears to be a real school.

Actually killing the Blair magnet. So they get their punishment.

MBLI sucks and is failing students. They don't even have books in the library, they can't provide transportation, they don't follow IEP's. The owners don't know how to run a business let alone a school. The state should face never allowed them to open.

So let me get this straight: MBLI not yet having books in the library of a building they JUST moved into is reason to shut them down, meanwhile, my children have never gotten textbooks from MCPS.

Also, you clearly have not seen the SAD state of many MCPS libraries. And if that's the basis for closing schools, then there are several MCPS schools that need to join MBLI on the closure list.

The Chater School will appeal, MCPS will lose.
