Is a good performance in 7th grade a good predictor for HS performance?

Is a good performance in 7th grade a good predictor for HS performance?

My ex wife sent me our daughter's transcript and a letter we got informing us that she was on high honors roll for the second marking period.

I was impressed. Her lowest grade was an A in science (96%) and all her other grades are 98% or higher. She got 100% in Math.

Unfortunately we won't have much saved for her for college. We hope she continues this way and hopefully she can get at least some kind of partial scholarship.

Do kids who have this kind of performance in 7th grade excel in HS as well? Or is 7th grade so easy that its too early to tell.

She had similar grades in 6th grade as well.

I barely finished HS. I just didn't like school and I was a problematic boy lol. But I was good in math though, despite not liking school . So I am so exited about this and can't contain my joy.

7th grade is too easy to tell. It also depends on the school.

Former math teacher here. Anyone who tells you that 100% in Math in 7th grade is easy don't listen to them. Its an impressive performance. I taught 7th grade at both top and public middle school before switching career to be an actuary. 100% as a final grade is not common.

Congrats to your daughter.

Here’s the key to future success—figure out how to inspire a good work ethic WITHOUT causing stress and burnout. This is incredibly hard to balance (imo). When things do get harder for her, encourage a growth mindset and tell her stories of times you persisted through challenging situations.

It’s an indication she completes and turns in her assignments, stays awake, and has a normal IQ. And to be clear- that is probably more than what most students are working with now.

High school grades will largely depend on what classes she takes. There are some high school classes that staying awake and turning stuff in on time will get you an A, and there are some that require a lot more work and effort for an A

I heard the same about my son in 7th grade. Then 8th grade. Then 10th grade. He remained consistent and he finished his first year with a 3.92 GPA as an AE major at Michigan.

Disagree. It’s easy and schools often offer kids opportunities to do corrections. Any kid with math aptitude isn’t going to be in 7th grade math in 7th grade

The fact that she had 95% or higher in every class is a good sign. My kids did well in 7th grade, but they struggled in English and other classes I can't recall.

You should be proud of her! I think 7th is like a fork in the road but I'm not sure I'd call it a predictor as things happen any year/semester. 7th is when things get more demanding though and she's getting high As not just As. I would encourage her to stay on that path but you can definitely feel some relief there. I was surprised by 7th grades too but it was for the wrong reasons

My school district does not allow any 7th grader to take 8th grade and higher classes in 7th grade.

That’s extremely unfortunate.

I have twins. The girl started as an A+ student in 6th grade and ended as an A+ student in HS. She is now a freshman at a top 10 school. Her twin brother total disaster lol. He started as a B and ended as a C. He is now going to trade school for HVAC.

I have four kids. All four had straight As in 7th grade. One of the four barely graduated high school.

I know. I went to school in Mali (West Africa). I took calculus 1 in 9th grade, in one of the poorest country in the world. By the time I came here for college I had already taken courses in calculus 1 to 3 and physics 1 and 2 and Intro to Organic chemistry. And I wasn't even an honors student. These classes I listed were standard classes.
