We got our first Giant/Peapod delivery yesterday and it arrived via a guy in a small sedan with Uber stickers in the window. I understand that the company shifted away from using actual employees and delivery trucks, but if I wanted Instacart groceries, I’d order that way.
How are people getting groceries delivered or is that not a thing anymore? |
| Instacart |

I go to the grocery store in person. Restarted in 2021 post-vax rollout.

I am also SO mad about this. I’ve been using Giant Delivers/Peapod for all my groceries since 2010. Union drivers making a living wage. They had the right equipment (refrigerated truck, hand carts, big bins), they knew what they were doing, I felt good about the whole thing. I generally tipped about $15 and that felt generous (they were just delivering the groceries, not shopping and packing).
Now it’s some poor person making absolute peanuts pulling up with their sedan, needing help getting all the groceries out. I feel awful for them, as I’m sure they make nothing. What happens if they hurt their back? They’re SOL. No workers comp for them. Plus the service is worse. And now I feel like I need to be tipping 20% minimum which is like $40-60. So shittier service that is exploiting these people AND I’m paying way more. We did a bunch of research and could not find any grocery delivery services that used employees anymore. It’s all farmed out to Uber or Instacart. I’d love to hear an alternative if anyone’s got one. Family of five with no car - we need grocery delivery and are willing to pay more. |
| Stop being lazy and go shop yourself. |
| I oder online at Wegman's and do drive up pickup. |
| I like south mountain creamery if you’re in their service area. They deliver more than just milk now |
Same. This is why I used to get deliveries from giant and used to have their subscription. Switching to giant pick up. |
|
If I order from giant which I do much less lately I order online and pull into designated parking spot and call for the order to be brought out. I tip the shopper a few dollars and drive off.
I wish I could order online from Trader Joe’s. Is that possible? |
That's instacart shopping for you, not regular wegman's employees. You still have to tip. |
| Harris Teeter too. |
| Just order and pick them up yourself. |
I happily pay my housekeeper to shop at TJ's and brave the madness there. I'm not parking my G Wagon in that insane parking lot, ha ha. |

I know I know Amazon is evil but Amazon got us food all through the pandemic and we got used to delivery. I am in my 70s and it's nice to just get my list, only have to haul bags once into house.
But Amazon Fresh is phased out in Arlington and Prime doesn't have all the same items. Always was people in cars and so is Prime Grocery. |
I asked about tipping and they don't accept them. |
