DC prefers SLACs, got accepted to all, but still waiting on Wesleyan and Denison.
Anyone have direct experience on the vibe at each of these schools? |
| These schools are quite different from one another. Did DC visit any of them? |
Yes, we visited Kenyon, Denison, Susquehanna and University of Richmond. We've heard/read about Univ of Richmond |

Hit submit too quickly....
Yes, we visited Kenyon, Denison, Susquehanna and University of Richmond. We've heard/read about Univ of Richmond being very Greek and wondering if it's still the same? |
| I have two kids at Denison. Do you have a specific question? I’d say it’s a close-knit community where kids are smart and serious about what they’re doing—whether that’s sports, arts, or academics—but the Denison culture is inclusive and balanced rather than intense/cutthroat. Students come from all across the country. President Weinberg is fantastic and really sets the tone. |
| Wesleyan feels like the outlier here. He hasn't visited? What appealed to him about it? |
|
Are all of these acceptances EA or RD? Didn’t realize they had all announced already?
Richmond is very fratty, pre professional- if that’s what your kid wants, it’s very good. Agree Wesleyan is basically its opposite on all fronts. |
Nope, we have not visited. He applied because of their open curriculum which intrigued him. He likes the idea of designing his own course of study. Is the open curriculum what makes Wesleyan the outlier here? |
Gotcha on University of Richmond. My kid loves their campus. Not sure if that's the kind of vibe he'll like. So Wesleyan isn't pre professional and not very fratty? EA acceptances: Susquehanna, University of Richmond, Muhlenberg Early RD acceptance: Kenyon Still waiting on RD decision: Denison, Wesleyan |
Great to hear all this! Thanks! Is Greek life dominant at Denison? Are there some classes that are so popular they're hard to get into? I've heard conflicting info on their career center. When we toured, they highlighted their career center as one of the best in the country. What's your kids' experience? |

Isn’t Susquehanna super fratty? What is it he wants in a college? Is merit important?
Wesleyan has a reputation for being intellectual, artsy leaning. It’s the most selective of the schools on your list. |
Susquehanna is not super fratty at all. It’s a typical D3 SLAC. Some kids are athletes, some kids go Greek, some kids are very into music and theater. The groups often overlap. Our nephew went there for a sport and loved it. |
| Wesleyan then a tier including Richmond Kenyon and Denison (not any particular order) are most well known. I’m sure you can get a great education at all, but might be easier from employment perspective to go to one of the better known schools. Probably strongest cohort at Wesleyan but it is def not a place everyone loves. Kenyon is very small and a bit isolated so make sure kid is ok with that. Richmond has very interesting PPE type program if kid is interested. |
Wow you don't read do you? |
|
Can you share your student's general stats? I have Susquehanna, Muhlenberg, and maybe Kenyon and Denison (reaches) in mind to talk to my son about, but we don't really know what a reach is until we see the SAT and GPA in a couple of years.
Richmond strikes me as the fratty one and going only by what I read, the others have more down to earth student bodies and supportive atmospheres. |
